Pray For Your Last Rites…

Sure, you probably haven’t heard Sacred Rite but you should. They were the perfect blend of classy riffs, tasteful vocal melodies, solid drumming and just all around badassedness.

My memory is a little fuzzy about how I got into these guys. I can’t remember whether I bought the tape or got “Is Nothing Sacred” as a gift from a former friend from high school. It doesn’t matter, the album was brilliant.

Just the album cover (Destroying Angel by Michael Whelan) alone was enough to let me know that I was holding something special. To this day it’s one of my favorite pieces of art and still may get it tattooed on me somewhere…sometime.

Even though this is not an concept album, it flows very much like one. I generally skip the instrumental though. It’s good but just doesn’t do it for me. The rest of the album is just great. Iron Maiden meets UFO. The bass work by Pete Crane is phenoemnal. The lead vocals and harmonies are what really set them apart. It was really too bad they never got bigger than they did. The final 2 songs of the album are beautiful and fit so perfectly together. I’ll post the live vids below…watch them in order. There’s also a great version of Eleanor Rigby on the album.

Back on my birthday in Feb 2000 I was surfing around on my WebTV (hell yeah!) and got an email from Sacred Rite’s bassist saying that he was shocked that anyone even remembered his old band. My original website was called “Is Nothing Sacred” and featured their album cover as my background. We began writing regularly and I asked im if he ever considered putting their 3 albums out on CD. he still had the master reelsd and some demo stuff and we started shopping it around to some underground labels. I contacted Denis Gulbey at Sentinel Steel and he was very interested in the project and I knew he’d do a good job with packaging and such. The groundwork was layed and Pete and Denis started working together on this endeavor which ended up being 2 volumes. I was asked to write a foreward for each volume. I probably could have done better. All I really wanted to write was, “They fuckin’ rule!” but Denis wanted more.

The CDs came out 3 or 4 years ago and are almost sold out. You can buy them directly from Denis here. You won’t be disappointed.

Here are the vids I promised.

  1. Hi Sean

She’s okay, mate. Out of hospital…women’s stuff…ahem. I’m probably too virile, or something! Kidding.

Posting back at Flakes again. Discovered the ‘Ignore’ button! Only took me 9 years. ;)

  2. I never heard them, but seem to remember an ad in the back of one of the metal mags for it.
