To all my friends!
I think I may have posted about this movie once, but whatever. You’re not the boss of me.
Barfly is one of my favorite movies of all time. The dichotomy of Henry in this movie is great and most of us know someone similar. Henry is a drunk, plain and simple. Who knows why he drinks? It’s never really stated in the movie.
The flip side is Henry’s brilliance. He’s a writer of short stories and poetry. His little poetic one liners are simply great and Mickey Rourke was a perfect pick for this part.
“Hatred, the only thing that lasts.”
I had a friend years ago who reminded me of Henry. He drank…all the time. He was fun to be around but he always got smashed beyond belief and it seemed to happen daily. He was/is a great guy, but he drinks incessantly. Sometimes I wondered why he ended up like he did. I knew his family well and they seemed normal enough. But then again, what is normal? No one knows what went on behind closed doors.
See the movie. It’s worthwhile.

Did you happen to see Matt Dillon in Factotum? I felt he made a far better Chinaski. Check it out.
“That’s the problem with drinking,I thought, as I poured myself a drink. If something bad happens you drink in an attempt to forget; if something good happens you drink in order to celebrate; if nothing happens you drink to make something happen”
