Sixburgh!

So, I’ve been watching Steelers football for as long as I can remember and have seen every super bowl game since IX, the Steelers’ first. Both of my parents were from western PA so naturally they were fans and it trickled down to me.

I considered going this year but decided to use my money a little rmoe wisely and pay off a credit card. Done!

When Super Bowl XXX was happening, I had a party at my house and I was married at the time. When O’Donnell threw the 2nd interception for a TD to the Cowboys I got a little pissed and kicked everyone out of the party. Yes, I take it a little too seriously sometimes.

This year’s game was pretty good. I had another party (3rd year in a row) and had about 12-15 people there throughout the course of the game. Lots of food and beer and great friends. I was pretty excited through the whole game until the 4th quarter when the Steelers got lax and let the cards start scoring. Typical Steelers football. Irritating.

Some things I noticed about the televised game and even more confirmed after speaking to a few folks who attended the game.

1. The cameras rarely panned the crowd. According to one friend who was there, he said it was easily 100:1 Steelers fans to cards fans. Not too surprising. NBC is a bunch of wussies trying to make it appear “fair” on TV.

2. The crowd noise seemed enhanced. When the Steelers made a big play, you heard cheers and such. But when the Cards made big plays, the volume seemed to double. I’d bet dime to a dollar NBC, again, was trying to make it seem like an even crowd.

But hey, whatever. The Steelers won and for that I am happy. There were awful calls on boths sides of the ball for both teams and a ton of no-calls. Harrison should have been ejected and I am not convinced that Warner’s fumble at the end was a fumble, no matter if the NFL claims they reviewed it in the booth.

Here’s the precursor to my party:

I’m pretty excited to start Spanish classes next week. Five weeks, every Tuesday night for 3 hours. I hope I will not be too far in over my head, it’s been a long time since I have used my Spanish. We’ll see. I’ll of course keep you posted as if someone really cares. Will Amelia enroll in time? We’ll see. Her bitch ass better be there!

This past weekend? Not too shabby. Friday…what did I do? ummm…oh…I went downtown to hang out for a bit but it was pretty lame, even with all the people there. Mohawk had an RSVP only show and i tried talking my way in because a friend of mine wa sin there that I wanted to see. It was one of the rare occasions when I couldn’t BS my way in the door. I must be losing my touch! I ended up at the Chili Parlor for a little while. Saturday I went to a cookout just north of Dripping Springs that was put on by one of the guys I work with. Lots of German and Spanish cuisine. It was fun but I only last about 2 hours. I went back to the Chili Parlor (no shit, really) and hung out with Stewart, his daughter and her boyfriend. His daughter and her mother grew up a few miles from where I lived in my teen years and I knew some of her family. Small world. he boyfriend is super cool. he had a ’68 Bonneville that was badass and was telling me about the ’55 Chevy he has that needs some body work. I told him I’d help him out. I adore old cars. I ended up giving these 2 older broads from new Hampshire a ride back to their hotel at 51st/IH35 as their wait for a cab was going to be 2 hours. They were here for ACL. Right on, older broads! They were pretty cool actually and really knew music. Yesterday, as with most Sundays this time of year, was about football. I was lounging in my boxers all afternoon being a total sloth. It was awesome.

Tonight I’ll find somewhere to watch the Steelers game. I haven’t had cable TV since about 1994. Yes, I am that lame.

I’m pretty sure it was spring or fall of 1991 (92 maybe?) when I went to JMU to visit with Kelz for a weekend. While there we drank…a lot. No, really. A LOT. We hit the local watering hole called JM’s and went thru about 5 or 6 pitchers of beer all while trying to play the video bowling game. I swear I think we got better the drunker we got. I just remember hitting a few parties that night and drinking more. I remember listening to some Dwight Yoakim on vinyl at some dude’s apartment. I went blind that night, that is until Kelz said “dude, open your eyes.” Oh, well…that was why I couldn’t see. Thanks!

The next day we went record store hopping which I believe consisted of 2 record stores and a few pawn shops. Harrisonburg, VA is not a big town. One of the things he played for me while I was there was was this odd sounding industrial song called “Fin” by Feotus Interruptus which featured clips from Overkill’s debut LP Feel The Fire…you know, the “kill kill kill kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiillllllllllll” part. Of course you know.

He let me hear a few other songs from that album “Thaw” and I believe made me a cassette dub of “Nail” for the long ride home. I was hooked. Totally not my style of music but this guy’s arrangements and lyrics we pretty cool. He was totally vile, raw, irreverent and everything he needed to be.

See, Foetus is really just one guy…Jim (JG) Thirwell, Clint Ruin, Foetus. He does his albums himself and has a live touring band. All Foetus albums are four letter word titles…Deaf, Ache, Rife, Hole, Thaw, Nail, Sink, Gash, Null, Void, Boil, Love, Flow, Blow…you get the picture.

The week after I got married in June of ’95, Kelz called and told me that Feotus was playing in DC @ the old 930 Club. The wife indulged me and gave me the go ahead to go. I think she went to her mom’s that weekend anyway. That was great fun. We got chased by a gimpy bum, ate great chinese food, saw Foetus and just had a good time.

The Foetus stuff was pretty much trash from the time Gash came out until now. Once he got signed to Sony and started doing work for MTV, my interest in his music waned. Lots of his side projects were pretty cool, mainly Wiseblood and Steroid Maximus.

You can check out his newer stuff here. More info at Foetus.org.

Back To School…

with one comment

I really have a thing for ellipses, yes?

Well, I am taking the plunge and going back to school. No, not obedience school although that would probably do me some good lately too. I’m going to be taking the Spanish II and III “informal classes” at University of Tejas this fall and spring.

Twenty years ago I could speak fairly good Spanish but never used it so most of it went away. The company that we are subcontracted under is from Spain and most of the guys in our office speak OK English. I think it would be helpful in all communications with them to be bilingual. Not to mention that I now live in North Mejico and Spanish and Spanglish are everywhere.

I think the great philosopher Homer (Simpson) said it best:

“Brain? You don’t like me and I don’t like you. But let’s just do this and I can get back to killing you with beer.”

Amelia is going to take the class with me so at least I’ll have someone I know in there to cut up with. She’s cool. She bought me lunch today.

So, I am looking forward to it, sort of. When I was in high school, I despised sitting in the classroom all day listening to the teacher babble about God knows what…’the War of 1812 this’ or ‘please factor these whatchamajiggers’ or the usual ‘Sean, please stop using your desk as a set of drums, and spit that gum out!’

I think I’ll manage. My company is paying for it too, so that’s pretty nifty.

If anything, I’ll just try to be half as cool as Rodney:

This movie rules.
