Kreator/Accept/Swallow The Sun Concert Review, Austin, TX 9/30/12

I guess it was 1981 or 1982 when my brother Robert (RIP) came home with Accept’s Breaker on cassette.  I thought it was pretty cool but they catch my ear like Priest, Cooper, Sabbath and the other bands I was into at the time did.  It wasn’t until hearing Balls to the Wall (BTTW) in 83 on the radio that I sort of got in tune with Germany’s.  I’d never call myself a hardcore fan but I enjoy pretty much all of their stuff from Russian Roulette on back.  Restless and Wild and BTTW would be my 2 faves.  I didn’t listen to them at all throughout the 90s and 2000s until I ad read somewhere that TT Quick’s Mark Tornillo had joined Accept.  I LOVE TT Quick’s  Metal of Honor album…LOVE IT!  Thanks to Big Bill for turning me on to that one in high school.  The 2 albums with Mark are really strong and he sounds great with them.  He is a perfect fit.  While he’s not Udo, he has a similar style that works quite well.  I met Udo back in 2000.  He was standing next to me while Raven was on stage.  Nice enough fella.

Kreator has been to Austin at least one other time since I’ve lived here but I didn’t see them.  I’ve never really been a fan.  I don’t dislike them, I’m just indifferent about them.  They had some great album covers back in the 80s, though.  However, when Tommy Vertelli from Coroner joined their ranks, they got my interest.  I do like the 2 albums he did with them, Outcast and Endorama; mainly because I can hear Tommy’s influence and I love Coroner.

When this show was first advertised, I made it a point to keep that date open as I really wanted to see Accept.  So…ticket bought and away we go.

If you’ve been paying even minor attention to this site, you know my obsession with getting The Booksigned when opportunity presents itself.  I had nothing to do yesterday afternoon and decided to just go to the venue a few hours before the

doors open and see what I can get done.  *cough* NERD *cough*  I was able to park right next to the buses and I just hung out for a bit and Kreator’s drummer, Ventor, came off of the bus and sat on the curb to smoke a cigarette.  I got out of my car, sat down next to him, introduced myself and talked to him and one of the roadcrew for about 15 minutes.  He signed the book and joked on the picture of himself.  I asked him if Mille was available and he said he was sleeping on the bus.  Cool.  No biggie.  After this I went back to my car for a bit.

King’s X’s tour manager was walking around the parking lot and he’s a good pal of mine.  He was looking for Kreator’s manager and the Accept guys as he’s friends with both.  “Accept’s plling up shortly.  Did you bring the book?”  They know me so well, eh?  A cab pulled up and Herman Frank, Wolf Hoffman and Mark Tornillo got out.  My friend was talking to them for a few then he waved me over and introduced us all.  I cracked open the book to the TT Quick page and Mark signed my CD cover and the page.  We spoke briefly about that record and I mentioned how much I loved it.  He said it was nice to see someone bringing that stuff to the shows.  Herman was up next and he saw the picture of Accept with Jorg Fischer and said, “”I’m prettier than that other guy. I’ll sign here.  Maybe over his face?”   He was obviously a fun loving  guy and was joking around with us.  I talked to him a bit about my love of his other band Victory.  “Oh, you’re the guy who bought that record?”  haha.  Wolf saw the photo and said, “Man, I had hair!”  A few moments later another car pulls up and Peter Baltes and Stefan Schwarzmann came over.  They said their hellos to my friend and Peter asked about the book.  I opened to his picture with Accept and said, “I’m still pretty” and laughed.  I told him about seeing him on tour with Dokken in 1991.  “Holy shit, you saw that?  How were we?”  Accept’s drummer, Stefan, has been around the block playing with Running Wild, Udo, X-Wild, Krokus and Helloween.  I had him sign the Running Wild page, shook hands with all of them and off they went to the bus.  Right place, right time and patience paid off.  I’m glad I had the time to hang out.

The doors at Emo’s East were supposed to be at 7PM but they didn’t open until 8 and Swallow The Sun was on at 8:10 with only a few people in the venue.  That sucked for them.  I waited a while outside with some friends to let the line go down and ended up only catching their last 2 songs in person.  They were alright.  Solid, mid-paced death/doom.  I used to own their debut album but it didn’t stick around long.

Up next was Accept.  They came out and just rocked.  The whole band looked like they were having a great time.  Herman, Peter and Wolf were pretty much smiling the whole show.  They played many of my favorites including Breaker, Metal Heart, Princess of the Dawn, Restless and Wild, Fast as a Shark and, of course, Balls to the Wall.  I was hoping to hear London Leather Boys, but oh well.  Their newer material sounded great live and was very well received by the crowd.  About halfway through the set, the place really filled up.  It was definitely a crowd where the majority was there to see Kreator.

And then there they were.  They hit the stage and just went into hard and heavy.  They were extremely tight and their lead guitarist was quite enjoyable to watch.  I stayed through 5 or so songs.  I did get to hear Enemy of God and a song from Endorama, Phobia, which I liked a lot.  Ventor is a beast on the drums, holy crap.  The crowd was totally into them, too, which was great to see.  But it was almost 11:30PM and I was tired.  I had to get up at 6Am for work today so I bailed out.

I will say that if Kreator makes their way back around here, I’d try and go see them again.  Accept is playing the South Texas Rock Fest in October in San Antonio, but I don’t think I’ll make it.

If you like any of these bands and can make it to the show, you won’t be disappointed.

The Smashing Pumpkins Concert Review, Austin, TX 9/27/12

with one comment

I’m the first to admit that while I’m not what you can consider a true fan of The Smashing Pumpkins, I do really like their first 2 or 3 albums quite a bit.  The guys I hung out with quite a bit between 91-95 listened to these albums incessantly, so they became ingrained in my brain.  I also really enjoyed the drum work of Jimmy Chamberlin.  The guy was a beast of a drummer on those recordings.  Too bad he wasn’t with them last night.

Last night marked the sold out opening of the Oceana Tour at Stubb’s in Austin, TX.  While none of the original band is still in tact beyond Billy Corgan, they were solid.  The sound of that show was pretty quiet compared to most shows I have seen there.  But it was crystal clear and really just provided good background music as I was with a group of friends and we could still converse while the band was playing.

The most impressive part of the show was that they played for 2.5 hours with the first hour being their entire new album.  Pretty ballsy as most bands just intersperse new songs in with their classics.  The low point of the set was his cover of Bowie’s Space Oddity.  It just didn’t do it for me.

It was a good time overall even not knowing or caring that much about half of the set.  Unfortunately we were near the back of the venue staying close to the bar and I couldn’t get a pics.  haha

Tons of upcoming shows…

Outside of the local stuff that I see every week, I’m seeing a lot of national acts coming up.
9/27 – Smashing Pumpkins – I’ve never seen them before and I like their first 2 albums quite a bit.  While I’ve not liked everything they’ve done, I’ve always like Corgan’s attitude of “my way or the highway.”

9/30 – Kreator/Accept – Two more bands that I’ve never seen.  More excited about Accept but will surely be happy to see both.  Hopefully I can get the book signed as well…and my TT Quick CD!  ;)

11/11 – Styx – Another band I haven’t seen.  No DeYoung but I’m OK with that.  Looking forward to seeing Tommy Shaw live.

11/16 – Aerosmith/Cheap Trick – Saw Aerosmith twice (89 and 93) and Cheap Trick twice (99 and 2012).  That last Cheap Trick show blew me away and Aerosmith’s recent setlist is good enough to make me see them one last time.

Lita Ford Acoustic Concert Review, Austin, TX 9/4/12

with 6 comments

Lita Ford is still out there rockin’.  Later tonight she’s playing on the outskirts of Austin with Def Leppard and Poison.  No way in hell would you catch me at that show.  But today at 1PM, she played an acoustic set at Waterloo Records.  I first heard about this last week and was hoping I could catch it, but wasn’t quite sure.  We happen to eat lunch downtown and were about to ride by the record store.  I called a friend that I knew would be there and asked if he’d take me back to work afterwards.  “Yes!”  I told my boss to pull over and let me out.  “See you later!”

I get in and see some good friends (don’t any of us have day jobs? – hahahaha).  There were 2 acoustic guitars and 2 mics set up on the stage.  Lita comes out with a second guitarist and they go through 4 songs.  She talks a little between songs, does a little Q&A and tells some insight about the Runaways and Joan Jett.  When she introduced her guitarist, Mitch Perry, my mind started running as I knew that name.  The dude played in Talas, Asia, Schenker and some other stuff that we are all familiar with.

After her set, half of the crowd left and the other half of us stayed for the autograph session.  I think there were about 100 or so people there.  I was near the back of the line and purchased her new CD while waiting to have something to sign.  I really wish I had brought the book.  Lita’s signature would have been great in it, but a more obscure guy like Mitch Perry would have been great!  I love getting the obscure ones as much as the mainstream artists.  When it came my turn to shake hands and get my CD signed, I was talking to Mitch about the book and he asked me to send him a link to where he could pick one up.  I got to Lita and before she could say anything, I may have stammered a bit and said, “July 1988, The Boathouse, Norfolk, Virginia opening for Yngwie.  I was there.”  She replied with, “Holy fuck!”  Not much more needed to be said.   I was 18 at that show.  During one song, one of her boobs came out of the corset looking thing that she was wearing.  She was mid-solo and just looked down, smiled and shrugged it off and fixed it after the solo.  We were all cheering.  “Lita’s titty!”

She was really nice and snapped a picture with me.  Her voice sounded good and she still looks like “Lita.”  No Back In The Cave…that’s my jam.

I’m really glad I went.  No question.

Iron Maiden Concert Review, San Antonio, TX 8/15/12

with one comment

It was twenty-four years and 5 days ago that I had first seen my favorite band in the whole wide world.  That was on the Seventh Tour of a Seventh Tour.  Last night in San Antonio, Iron Maiden was reliving much of that tour on their Maiden England – North American Tour 2012.  This was only my 5th time seeing them, which to me seems sparse seeing that they’re my favorite band and all.  After Seventh Son, they didn’t come through my part of Virginia and I didn’t travel for many shows throughout the 90s.  Plus Bayley was singing for them through much of that time and I didn’t care.  I did miss a chance to see them with friends at Madison Square Garden with DIO and Motorhead.  I’ll always regret not going to that one a bit.  So be it.
Last night was my third time seeing them since moving to Texas and Maiden has always made it a point to take good care of Texas on their tours.  Back on the Beast tour, they played EIGHT different cities here.  That’s crazy!  And quite awesome.

I bought 8 tickets on the pre-sale as I knew that I could always sell them to friends, which I did.  One of those tickets was for my friend, Don.  We’ve known each other since about 85, played in our first band together in the 80s, worked together after high school for a bit, acted as the best man in each others’ wedding etc.  We have some history obviously.  He moved to San Antonio 2 years ago with his company and it’s great that he’s close by again.  He actually paid for my ticket as a birthday gift.  What a droog!  He visited in 2008 to see Maiden with me on the Somewhere Back In Time Tour and we also hung out for a bit at the 1988 show.  Fitting that we’d see yet another Maiden show together.  Burney and Vanessa rode with me and it was the same four folks sitting together as in the recent Scorpions show.  Good times.

After doing some heavy metal parking lot, we decided to all go in, the 8 of us, and see what was going on inside.  Fortunately we missed every note of Coheed and Cambria.  The first leg of the tour got Alice Cooper and we get this band.  Ugh.  I got in the t-shirt line to hopefully snag a handful of the Texas only shirts that Maiden always does but they were already sold out.  DAMN!  Hopefully a friend in Dallas or Houston can hook me up.

I grabbed a Coke and heard UFO’s Doctor Doctor come on and knew that the show was about to start.  I shot a quick text to the others to let them know that Maiden was about to hit the stage.  They quickly came and we were st our stations waiting for the show.

There were no surprises for the setlist as they’ve been playing the same list this whole tour.  They opened with Moonchild and went right into Can I play With Madness.  Now, I didn’t like Seventh Son when it came out and to this day I still think it’s a wimpy album, but it was a heck of a lot better than their 90s era.  It was good to catch the songs live again.  The Prisoner came next and it was the first time I had seen them play that since 1988.  It was also the first time I had ever seen them play Phantom of the Opera.  They did 2 Minutes which is one of my faves by them and just played a solid set in general.

Adrian and Dave are probably the greatest guitar duo in metal in my opinion.  They’ve still got the chops.  Steve was spot on and Nicko was mixing it up pretty well.  His style has changed a little over the years and I only wish we could actually see him behind his massive kit and not just hear him.  Jannick Gers is still a waste of space.  Fortunately he seemed a wee bit less animated last night and mostly stayed on his side of the stage.  And then there’s Bruce.  His live voice has seemingly grown stronger over the years and last night he was on his game for sure.  I am still impressed with how strong he is live.  He has also changed his singing style over the years.

They went through lots of stage prop and background changes and it was nice seeing some of the old Seventh Son stuff again.  There were a few moments where I felt like I was back at the Hampton Coliseum in 1988.  Hearing Wasted Years always gets me right in the heart.  Steve and Adrian’s backing vocals sounded really good, too.  It really makes me long for Another A.S.A.P. from Adrian as I love his voice.  That’s not going to happen though.

They were just great overall.  If I had to complain about anything (shocking, eh?), it would be The Trooper (always hated that song), Afraid To Shoot Strangers and Fear of The Dark.  I couldn’t stand that album and those 2 songs are my least favorites off of it.  Oh well.  Small price to pay to see my favorite band again, eh?

One observation that I will make is that many of the songs seemed to played slower than normal.  Getting old or just trying to control tempo?

When is the next tour already?  Let’s go!

Thank you and goodnight!
