Kreator/Accept/Swallow The Sun Concert Review, Austin, TX 9/30/12

I guess it was 1981 or 1982 when my brother Robert (RIP) came home with Accept’s Breaker on cassette.  I thought it was pretty cool but they catch my ear like Priest, Cooper, Sabbath and the other bands I was into at the time did.  It wasn’t until hearing Balls to the Wall (BTTW) in 83 on the radio that I sort of got in tune with Germany’s.  I’d never call myself a hardcore fan but I enjoy pretty much all of their stuff from Russian Roulette on back.  Restless and Wild and BTTW would be my 2 faves.  I didn’t listen to them at all throughout the 90s and 2000s until I ad read somewhere that TT Quick’s Mark Tornillo had joined Accept.  I LOVE TT Quick’s  Metal of Honor album…LOVE IT!  Thanks to Big Bill for turning me on to that one in high school.  The 2 albums with Mark are really strong and he sounds great with them.  He is a perfect fit.  While he’s not Udo, he has a similar style that works quite well.  I met Udo back in 2000.  He was standing next to me while Raven was on stage.  Nice enough fella.

Kreator has been to Austin at least one other time since I’ve lived here but I didn’t see them.  I’ve never really been a fan.  I don’t dislike them, I’m just indifferent about them.  They had some great album covers back in the 80s, though.  However, when Tommy Vertelli from Coroner joined their ranks, they got my interest.  I do like the 2 albums he did with them, Outcast and Endorama; mainly because I can hear Tommy’s influence and I love Coroner.

When this show was first advertised, I made it a point to keep that date open as I really wanted to see Accept.  So…ticket bought and away we go.

If you’ve been paying even minor attention to this site, you know my obsession with getting The Booksigned when opportunity presents itself.  I had nothing to do yesterday afternoon and decided to just go to the venue a few hours before the

doors open and see what I can get done.  *cough* NERD *cough*  I was able to park right next to the buses and I just hung out for a bit and Kreator’s drummer, Ventor, came off of the bus and sat on the curb to smoke a cigarette.  I got out of my car, sat down next to him, introduced myself and talked to him and one of the roadcrew for about 15 minutes.  He signed the book and joked on the picture of himself.  I asked him if Mille was available and he said he was sleeping on the bus.  Cool.  No biggie.  After this I went back to my car for a bit.

King’s X’s tour manager was walking around the parking lot and he’s a good pal of mine.  He was looking for Kreator’s manager and the Accept guys as he’s friends with both.  “Accept’s plling up shortly.  Did you bring the book?”  They know me so well, eh?  A cab pulled up and Herman Frank, Wolf Hoffman and Mark Tornillo got out.  My friend was talking to them for a few then he waved me over and introduced us all.  I cracked open the book to the TT Quick page and Mark signed my CD cover and the page.  We spoke briefly about that record and I mentioned how much I loved it.  He said it was nice to see someone bringing that stuff to the shows.  Herman was up next and he saw the picture of Accept with Jorg Fischer and said, “”I’m prettier than that other guy. I’ll sign here.  Maybe over his face?”   He was obviously a fun loving  guy and was joking around with us.  I talked to him a bit about my love of his other band Victory.  “Oh, you’re the guy who bought that record?”  haha.  Wolf saw the photo and said, “Man, I had hair!”  A few moments later another car pulls up and Peter Baltes and Stefan Schwarzmann came over.  They said their hellos to my friend and Peter asked about the book.  I opened to his picture with Accept and said, “I’m still pretty” and laughed.  I told him about seeing him on tour with Dokken in 1991.  “Holy shit, you saw that?  How were we?”  Accept’s drummer, Stefan, has been around the block playing with Running Wild, Udo, X-Wild, Krokus and Helloween.  I had him sign the Running Wild page, shook hands with all of them and off they went to the bus.  Right place, right time and patience paid off.  I’m glad I had the time to hang out.

The doors at Emo’s East were supposed to be at 7PM but they didn’t open until 8 and Swallow The Sun was on at 8:10 with only a few people in the venue.  That sucked for them.  I waited a while outside with some friends to let the line go down and ended up only catching their last 2 songs in person.  They were alright.  Solid, mid-paced death/doom.  I used to own their debut album but it didn’t stick around long.

Up next was Accept.  They came out and just rocked.  The whole band looked like they were having a great time.  Herman, Peter and Wolf were pretty much smiling the whole show.  They played many of my favorites including Breaker, Metal Heart, Princess of the Dawn, Restless and Wild, Fast as a Shark and, of course, Balls to the Wall.  I was hoping to hear London Leather Boys, but oh well.  Their newer material sounded great live and was very well received by the crowd.  About halfway through the set, the place really filled up.  It was definitely a crowd where the majority was there to see Kreator.

And then there they were.  They hit the stage and just went into hard and heavy.  They were extremely tight and their lead guitarist was quite enjoyable to watch.  I stayed through 5 or so songs.  I did get to hear Enemy of God and a song from Endorama, Phobia, which I liked a lot.  Ventor is a beast on the drums, holy crap.  The crowd was totally into them, too, which was great to see.  But it was almost 11:30PM and I was tired.  I had to get up at 6Am for work today so I bailed out.

I will say that if Kreator makes their way back around here, I’d try and go see them again.  Accept is playing the South Texas Rock Fest in October in San Antonio, but I don’t think I’ll make it.

If you like any of these bands and can make it to the show, you won’t be disappointed.

Meeting UDO/Raven – June 17, 2000

with one comment

My good friend Nyk invited me to stay the weekend with him in Northern Virginia the same weekend that UDO and Raven were playing Jaxx Nightclub in Springfield.  While I’m not the biggest Accept or Raven fan, I knew that we would be on the guestlist because at the time, Nyk was friends with John Gallagher of Raven.  It would also be a good opportunity to get some more sigs in The Book.  Raven’s drummer at the time was Hasselvander from Pentagram, a band that I am a HUGE fan of, so the chance to meet him is worth the trip in itself.  And to be clear, I love Restless and Wild and Balls to the Wall but I’m not as familiar with their other albums.  I owned Metal Heart and Russian Roulette at some point but I really don’t remember either one of them.  And Raven?  I’m not a fan…at all.  There, I said it.  Talented dudes, but not my thing.

The day of the show we have dinner with the Gallagher brothers and they were super nice guys. If memory serves me well, dinner was at an Asian place.  A few Raven fans spotted them and came over to say hello.  Honestly, prior to that day I wouldn’t know those dudes if they were standing next to me.

They take off for the show and we bum around for a bit then head there ourselves.  We’re on the list and get to go in the “upper room” above the bar while one of the opening bands was on.  Hasselvander was up there and let me tell you, he is one of the coolest dudes around.  We talked about Pentagram quite a bit as he was still involved at the time and his connection with Blue Cheer and his new band, Hounds of Hasselvander.  He was putting on some eyeliner and with it he can really pass for Ozzy.  Fun dude.  He signed the book as well the Gallagher brothers and I went back to put it in the car.  It’s a bit of a pain to lug around all night.

Right as Raven was going on, we were just standing a ways back from the front and I turn to go get a drink or something and bump into this little stocky dude.  I said, “Oh, sorry man. ” and he replied with “No problem.”  And instantly it hit me.  It was Udo!  He must be about 5’1″ or so.   I shook his hand and asked him to sign my ticket (see below).

Both bands put on great shows, no matter if I liked the music or not.  The musicianship was top notch for sure.

Ticket signed by Udo...flip it over and you can almost make out his name.

Dokken – Up From The Ashes

with 5 comments

I remember it like it was yesterday.  I was living in Western Branch off of Taylor Rd with my cousin.  I don’t remember album-up-from-the-ashesexactly what day it was on but it was Jan/Feb 1991 only weeks before my 21st birthday.  I believe it was a Saturday and I was driving home from somewhere listening to Z-Rock and the local affiliate comes on the air to interview Don Dokken and Mikkey Dee about their concert that night at the Boathouse in Norfolk, VA.  A former friend from high school and I had tickets and were pretty excited about the show.  I had been listening to Up From The Ashes since it came out a few months prior.

So as I am listening to them interview Don and Mikkey, I pull over to a gas station a few miles from my house and try to call the station to see if I could talk to them.  I was so damned excited that I kept fat fingering push buttons on the pay phone.  After about 3 or 4 tries I got through off air and got to talk to Don and Mikkey.  I asked if there was a way to meet Mikkey prior to the show and he told me what time to be at the Boathouse (super early).  I told him that I was a huge fan of his from the King Diamond days.  He said make sure I don’t have more than one person with me and everything would be cool.

So at this point I am flipping out (of course not on the phone but internally).  I get home a few minutes later and told my buddy what the plan was and that he had better be ready when I came by to get him.  He was notoriously slow at everything.  I told him if he wasn’t ready when I got there that I was leaving his ass behind.  Fortunately he was ready when I got there and we headed to Norfolk to the Boathouse.

We’re the first people in the lot along with the staff cars and Dokken’s bus.  Some dude came to the door of the bus and said they were coming from the hotel in a few minutes and to wait.  So we waited only a short amount of time and a minivan with Don, Mikkey Dee, John Norum and Billy White in it.  Mikkey gets out of the van and asks, “Are you Sean?”  I acknowledged and we were instantly escorted onto the bus.  So Don hands me a band photo which was already signed by Baltes (who was inside the Boathouse already).  So Don and the rest of the band sign it along with some other stuff like cassette covers and such (I hadn’t gotten into CDs yet).  He stood with us for a few minutes then hightailed it to the back of the bus to take care of stuff.  At this point I am freaking out because one of my all time favorite drummers and musical influences and standing next to me.  I don’t get start struck easily as I’ve met a lot of musicians over the years but this one was different.  This was Mikkey Dee…the guy who played drums on King Diamond’s Abigail.

We hung out for what seemed like an hour but was likely a lot less.  Talking with John Norum and Billy White was pretty neat.  Unfortunately in my giddy starstruck state I had forgotten that Billy White played on Watchtower’s debut.  To this day in my head I still hear my inner voice say, “You’re an idiot.”  Kelz reminds me of this regularly and he pointed out after the show, “Dude, how was it to meet Billy from Watchtower?”  Ummm…D’oh!  I am a Watchtower fanatic as well.  What a doofus.

But all in all, I was there to hang out with Mikkey which was the first of 3 times that I got to spend time with him, the other 2 being with Motorhead in 1993 and 2000.  Will post about those meetings some other time.

In my conversation with Mikkey, I noticed he was wearing an Abigail backstage pass.  It had one of the heavenly aura’s around it.  haha.  So being the fanboy that I was that night, we talked about drums and about some certain aspects of his playing that I tried to emulate.  I asked him if he was going to do a drum solo and he said there would be one.  I asked him if he could incorporate the intro to Welcome Home from the Them album.  He said, “That’s a good idea, we’ll see.”

So the opening act was on the stage at this point and it was time for us to get off the bus so they could get ready.  I can’t overstate how accommodating these guys were.  I honestly didn’t even need to see the show after that!  But we went in and caught the 2nd half of the set by The Blonz.  Wow.  They were just awful.  One of the worst bands I have ever seen.

So we make our way towards the front of the stage and got on the barricade at stage left which ultimately was in plain view of Mikkey when he was on the kit.  Perfect!

So out comes the band and they rip into their set.  They were absolutely incredible and it was one of the tightest sets I have ever seen by any band.  Watching Mikkey slay the drums and both Norum and White manhandling their guitars with such precision was pretty incredible.  Definitely one of the best shows I have ever seen.  Don’s vocals were clean and clear and he was an excellent frontman.

So I guess this blog is really about an album review, eh?  I’ve seen this one get trashed in many a metal review and I could never understand why.  It’s easily Don’s second best album behind Tooth and Nail and pretty much the last album that he actually sounded really good on.  Initially the main reason I bought the album was because I had read that Mikkey Dee was drumming on it.

Even with some of the slightly cheesier songs like Mirror Mirror and Stay, it’s an album of which I don’t ever feel the need to skip any of the tracks.  Good production as well.

This one gets 10/10.

Custard? WTF? There is a band named Custard?

with one comment

Yep.  Kelz made for me a compilation tape around 1997 that had some cool stuffs on it like Custard, Tension, custSkullview(!) and some other stuff that escapes me right now.   I listened to that tape all the friggin’ time until I got a car in 2000 that didn’t have a cassette player.  So I saw that Sentinel Steel Records had Kingdoms of Your Life on CD and picked it up promptly.  He always has cool stuff and I recommend you checking it out if you’re even mildly into Power Metal.

Custard hails from Germany and are apparently still together but I am pretty suer that this CD is out of print, that’s why I am posting it here.  Fading Memories is the only song I can’t get into.  This is good straight up power metal.  The singer’s range isn’t that great but it’s very listenable.  Failed Mission is easily my favorite.  They have little bit of Maiden, Helloween, Accept etc in their sound.

I never bothered to check out their other albums, likely out of fear of disappointment.

On a scale of 1-5, this gets an easy 3.75.

Enjoy it!
