Candlemass – Death Magic Doom

with 3 comments

Let’s get this straight. I’m a Candlemass fan. I’m a fan of doom metal as well. Not a huge fan, but a fan nonetheless. I’m also a Solitude Aeturnus fan. I simply adored Robert Lowe’s soaring vocals on that stuff. When I had first heard about him joining Candlemass I was pretty excited. Then I bought King of the Grey Islands and totally got let down, mainly by the vocals.

I love all the Candlemass albums with Messiah Marcolin. In general there’s not a stinker in the bunch and his “comeback” album a few years back was nothing short of a great. I even liked the Chapter VI album with Thomas Vikström…A LOT! I really thought Lowe would be a good fit with this guys. I’m wrong. Unfortunately it has taken me buying the last 2 Candlemass CDs to prove it to myself.

His voice sounds tired and uninspired. To be honest, he sounds a lot like Dio on the latest Heaven and Hell album. Some might call that a good thing, but it’s not so good for me. I understand that many of the higher-ranged metal singers of yesteryear can no longer do it, and I can respect and recognize that. But with a band like Candlemass it’s pretty much expected…from me at least.

Lowe sound great on Solitude’s Alone album, still not like the early vocals he did with them but better than he sounds with Candlemass.

*shrug*

I dunno. I’ve listened to Death Magic Doom a few times now and I just can’t get into it. I think I’m going to go listen to Nightfall now.

We’ll Burn the Sky…

with one comment

So I guess it was around 2000 when my best friend Daniel and I went to see DIO, Deep Purple and the Scorpions at the Va Beach Amphitheater. I think I had scored some free tix from someone and they were grass passes. It was a great show all in all. Doug Aldrich was a badass for DIO, Deep Purple was better than expected and I was all excited when they played Perfect Strangers.

But…the highlight of the night was when the Scorpions played “We’ll Burn the Sky.” When Klaus Meine announced that they were going to go back and play and old song, I expected some like “Loving You Sunday Morning” or something else from Lovedrive. Much to our surprise, he announced We’ll Burn the Sky. Daniel and I stood up and cheered along with about 5 other people it seemed. Obviously most of the Scoprions fans there wanted to just hear stuff from Love At First Sting.

This is one of my all time faves from them. They always wrote such great love songs/ballads and this one simply rules.

The song seems to be about his girl who died.

I’m in love with the sunshine
I’m in love with the falling rain
Everything seems to call your name
Yesterday, you were leavin’
Leavin’ life and all the pain
Everything wants you back again

I’ve found myself through you
And there was love in my life
I felt always naturally high
And my love had a home
But now my mind has started to roam
You’re my life-giving fire
And you carry all my love
Through you I was so inspired

You’re engraved deep in my heart
My dreams recall us being one
I’ve searched for you to be free
My force of life you have always been
I feel blue since you’ve gone
Your breath of love surrounded me
When can I rejoin you to be free
Wait, can this be a dream

There is a voice in my head
It belongs to you, it says
Don’t cry no need to be sad
There’s a way to stay with you again
It’s more than you ever had
And no death brings us apart
Our timeless love always grows
Because you are my other heart

I know we’ve never been apart
Your love sets fire to my heart

We’ll Burn The Sky
When it’s timeFor me to die!
We’ll Burn The Sky
Oh YeahWe’ll Burn The Sky
Oh YeahWhen it’s time to die
We’ll Burn The Sky
We’ll Burn The Sky

Sighting of the ages…

with one comment

Every morning on my way to work around 6:45AM I see this old couple walking the streets in my neighborhood. Both have on shorts (pastel colored), a golf style 3-button shirt, tennis shoes, white socks (pulled up high of course) and a floppy hat like Gilligan would wear. They are out there every morning even when it’s raining. I would easily assume that both of them are well into their 70s and maybe even their 80s. Plain and simple, they are old. They both look pretty frail, especially the wife. I assume that’s why they are always holding hands. Maybe not. Maybe they are just holding on to each other for no other reason than they still care.

When I see them, I am always reminded of a song by Fates Warning called the Apparition and these lyrics specifically:

In the four corners of life are the golden mirrors
Reflecting what you are and what you are to be

In the first is a young boy white dove in
His hand, in the second is a warrior in armor
In the third is the old man gold watch
In his hand fourth and last
No reflection at all

One morning I’d like to just stop and say hi to them. I get the feeling that if I do, they’ll just pump their fists in the air and yell, “Stop driving like a maniac you young whippersnapper!” or “Get out of my yard!”

It all comes around to Dokken again…

with one comment

and ellipses.

So I am at the local Fresh Plus grocery store which is a trendy little hippie run place in Clarksville. I really hate the place because of the scenesters that work there that look at you funny because you walk in with a Black Sabbath shirt on.

But I went in today cuz I wanted some fresh ground beef and theirs is always cheap (I think it’s human meat, not cow but whatever) and it’s only a few blocks away. One of the floppy haired kids that worked there was wearing an ’88 Dokken tour shirt, original. As I was leaving I asked to check out the back but this shirt was for the west coast leg of the tour. I told him I saw that tour in Virginia and he freaked out. He asked who they played with and I mentioned that it was Aerosmith when they were still gasping their last breath of air in being a decent band. Yeah, they suck now.

It was obvious the kid didn’t really know what he was wearing, but it was a nice trip down memory lane. Both Dokken and Aerosmith kicked ass that night.

The down side of that night was that I was supposed to meet up with a girl I had been hanging out with at the time. Lisa. She was a pretty blonde haired, blue eyed petite girl who was really nice. I got to the show at Hampton Coliseum and saw her holding hands with the guy that she broke up with a month or 2 earlier. I was a little broken hearted but I got over it quickly once Dokken hit the stage. My buddies and I pushed our way all the way to the front and rocked out on the barricade front and center.

Good times.
