Queensryche & Armored Saint Concert Review, San Antonio, November 22, 2016

I’ve been working in Houston during the week lately and have missed some shows that I wanted to see lately as I cross paths with the bands while traveling between Austin and Houston.  Missing Diamond Head hurt a little.  Even though I’m not a huge fan, I have always wanted to see them live.  Such is life.

I picked up tix for Leanne, Rodney and myself and headed to Alamo City Music Hall.  I don’t like this venue at all.  The sound is horrible and stage lighting for the bands just sucks, but they get quality shows so that’ll keep me coming back.  As we arrived I got in touch with Armored Saint guitarist, Jeff Duncan, who I’ve known for some years.  We hung outside at their bus for a little while while the opening band played.  Great dude, killer guitarist.

We caught the last few songs of Midnight Eternal.  They were listenable keyboard-heavy metal.  After a quick set change, Saint came out an executed their short set flawlessly.  Bush’s voice was squarely in tact and the whole band was on fire.  I just wish the sound in that place wasn’t so shitty.  I really like Saint’s latest album, Win Hands Down, and they opened with that track.  They mixed the set up from some of the other shows so we didn’t get Last Train Home or Nervous Man, two of my favorites, but it didn’t detract from their performance.

Queensryche was up next and I hadn’t seen them with Todd yet.  Overall I’m not a huge fan of anything of theirs post-Rage for Order.  I know I’m in the metal minority when I say I don’t care much for Operation Mindcrime.  While the band played perfectly and Todd sounded absolutely amazing, we were both pretty bored and left during their 4th song.  I did get to hear Best I Can, which I do like a lot.  Again, sound is such a huge issue with this place.

Looked like about 400ish people were there which is a good showing for a Tuesday night.

On Meeting Geoff Tate of Queensrÿche and Drinking His Wine

Geoff Tate’s Queensrÿche Facebook page announced today that he was doing a bottle signing for his Insania wine nearby. So I ran home, grabbed The Book, a photo I took of him at a signing in 1989 and headed up to Spec’s. Small crowd but it was cool meeting him again. He took special interest in The Book and asked how to get one. After the signing, his wife was giving out samples and I tried the red. I also bought some for myself. Good wine, pretty expensive though.

Meeting Queensryche 1989

with 3 comments

So there we were, some former friends from high school I heading to Tracks at Ward’s Corner in Norfolk, VA to do the free meet and greet with Queensryche.  It was a nice warm afternoon in March.  Kirshon brought something to get signed but I don’t remember what exactly.  One of my friends brought his copy of their first EP and I had nothing.  I couldn’t find my Warning cassette so when we were getting out of Kirshon’s truck, I just grabbed a piece of notebook paper.

It was a remarkably small crowd if memory serves me correctly and the line moved quickly. I snapped a few photos and had them sign my sheet of paper, of which each one of them joked on.  When they got to my friend’s EP, Tate said, “Where have you been keeping this, in your back pocket?” He laughed and replied with, “Pretty much.”  They were all really nice guys and some of the nicest I’ve met in situations like this.  They were having fun with the people there and were constantly talking trash to each other.

Queensryche was touring with Metallica on their …And Justice For All/Operation Mindcrime tours, respectively.  By this time I was already done with Metallica.  I thought AJFA was a shitty album (still do!) and didn’t even really care for Mindcrime (still don’t!), but I figured I’d get to hear enough stuff from the previous 2 albums and the EP to satisfy me.  They did several from Mindcrime but it was fine.  They kicked ass and made Metallica look like amateurs.  Even Metallica’s older songs sounded like they came from AJFA. Blech!

My girlfriend’s little brother Ryan came with us to the show and I think he may have been 14 at the time.  He loved Queensryche so we took him.  We were all 4 on the barricade for Queensryche but during Metallica we moved back towards the sound board area and a big mosh pit broke out in front of us.  Ryan got sucked in and I could see the look of fear in his eyes so I ran into the pit and extracted him as quickly as I could.  To this day he still says, “thanks for saving my life that night!”  hahaha

Enjoy the photos.
