The Eagles Concert Review, San Antonio, TX, October 15, 2014

eaglesThroughout the 70s, the Eagles were everywhere. You couldn’t get away from them at all. They were played on the country and rock stations. They made millions. Snorted and drank away millions as well. To say I was a huge fan back then would be a big exaggeration. I’d easily say I like them more now than I did back then. My oldest brother, Mark, was more into country and southern rock than the heavier stuff that Robert and I were in to. In 79 or 80, I remember him bringing home The Long Run LP. Something about that album caught me. It’s easily my favorite by the band and I spun Mark’s copy dozens of times over the years. I Can’t Tell You Why is my favorite Eagles song of all time with King of Hollywood, In The City and Take It To The Limit rounding out the top list. I knew In The City from The Warriors movie which I saw in a drive in theater a year or so prior to this album coming out.

I never saw them live before and when they toured in 94-96 for Hell Freezes Over, I was pretty much disinterested in seeing anything non-metal related.

Then The History Of The Eagles documentary started airing on Showtime. I watched it a good 10 times. I love band documentaries and this is one of the best I’d ever seen. It rekindled my interested in the band and I went back through and started listening to the back catalog again, pre-Long Run as that one is always in rotation with me.

When they announced the “History” tour, I missed getting tickets to the Dallas show and was a bit disappointed until the second leg of the tour got announced and they scheduled a date at the AT&T Center in San Antonio. Sweet! I got tickets a little later in the day that they went on sale and didn’t get good seats at all, but I didn’t care that much; I just wanted to be there. So I got 4 tickets for my friend Gordon, his wife and whatever friend I decided to take. For this show it was Margarita. She’s a good concert companion and lives on the way to the venue.

We get to the venue around 7:15 but it took us almost 40 minutes to just get into the parking lot. It was a pain in the ass but we got in the venue, hit the bathrooms, grabbed a beer and went up to our seats, side stage damn near the top of the venue. I’m not afraid of heights, but these seat locations were a bit up there. One wrong move standing up and losing balance and you could easily roll down some rows over people. I wonder how often it happens during Spurs games there. The seats up there weren’t comfortable in the least. We were right on top of each other with zero leg room. I’ve sat in lower sections there and it’s much better. Lesson learned.

Then the lights go down and there’s Glen Frey on stage with an acoustic guitar. He goes right in Saturday from the first album. Bernie Leadon comes out and sings Train Leave Here Tomorrow Morning and little by little the other remaining members come out…Don Henley, Timothy B Schmidt and Joe Walsh.

They played 12 songs to start with ending that set with Take It To The Limit with Frey on vocals as Randy Meisner is obviously not in the band now. The entire band sounded 100x better than I expected a bunch 65+ year old guys to sound. I was utterly blown away by that. Guitar playing was spot on as well. During the break I decided to grab a tshirt. They had 2 designs that I liked so I bought them both. Expensive but whatever, I love black concert shirts with tour dates on the back. BUT WAIT. Where’s San Antonio on this list? I got back in line to get a refund as SA was not on there. The lady looked through all of the other shirts and couldn’t believe SA wasn’t listed. Then she refunded my cash. Unfortunately during that time, they played I Can’t Tell You Why. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan! Schmidt sounded incredible; I just wish I had seen it. *sigh* My buddy was working one of the other merch booths and apparently some of the shirts did have SA listed. I think he grabbed one for me.

Best as I could tell, the band didn’t sound tuned down at all to help with the vocals. Even if they were a half step down, it was still impressive. Timothy, Don and Joe all sounded like they hadn’t lost anything. Glen’s voice was a little hoarse when they started and he even mentioned it at the beginning, but he still sounded fine. If there was a high note he knew he couldn’t hit, he just didn’t try. Respectable. But the other guys were nailing the high harmonies.

I never realized how big Joe Walsh’s hands were. I swear they looked like gorilla hands and they just swallowed the guitars he was playing. He’s listed online as 5’10” but looks a lot bigger. They played Pretty Maids All In A Row, In The City, Life’s Been Good and Funk 49 in the 2nd set and it was impressive. First encore was Hotel California and we took the decision that in the 2nd encore (after looking at the setlist online) to leave. They started Take It Easy and we bailed. We missed Rocky Mountain Way (blech!) and Desperado (the reprise was played earlier, so we got a taste of it). It was a good decision. We got out and onto the highway home fast.

Side note: walking in, security staff said no pictures or video allowed and it was announced a few times before the show started. It was nice not staring into everyone’s cellphones all night.

Another great show with great friends.

Lizzy Borden Concert Review, San Antonio, TX, August 16, 2014

Last night marked the third time since 2001 that I’ve seen Lizzy Borden.  I’ve been a fan since being introduced to them via their first EP.  They’re currently touring on the “30 Years of American Metal Tour” and last night was the 3rd of three shows in Texas.  One of my lifelong friends lives in San Antonio so I picked him up before the show and we headed to Fitzgerald’s after grabbing some Thai food.  We missed the first band and stayed outside on the patio during the second band.  Not my thing.

James Rivera’s Metal Asylum came on next playing songs from many of the bands that’s been involved in over his career as well as some of his favorite cover songs.  The sound in this venue was horrible and I’m not sure that it was equipment issues.  Beyond the huge shows at the AT&T Center and Alamo Dome, every bar gig that I see in San Antonio sounds like shit.  Last night was no different.  Rivera sounded good through most of his set, but it did seem that he was having trouble hearing himself.  Between going in and out during most of his set, it was enjoyable.

While on the patio during the second band, I saw Lizzy and his bassist, Marten, by their RV and spoke to them for a minute.  Lizzy asked how the crowd was and I told him, “Maybe 100, probably a little less.”  He looked disappointed.  By the time that they came on stage, a lot of the crowd had already left.  I figured that would happen as a lot of the crowd was there to see Rivera as he’s still very popular in Texas.

Lizzy came on and the sound issues continued through his set.  I stood up front for much of the show but moved around to gauge the mix and it was just awful.   Nonetheless, the band was solid although I was surprised to see them with only one guitarist which happened to be Ira Black who has notably played with Metal Church and Vicious Rumors as well as being on the last Lizzy album.  He played well but some of the guitar harmony stuff was noticeably absent.  Lizzy did costume and mask changes between every song which got a little tedious.  I’d love to see him just do a tour with no makeup.  Maybe I’m just getting old but I don’t need the theatrics to keep me interested in a band or their show.  His music stands on its own for me.  But that’s his thing, so be it. It was good to see them again and I really liked watching Marten’s bass work.  He’s good.

It was a fun show and a great night with one of my best friends.  And for the record, Lizzy and drummer Joey Scott (Lizzy’s brother) signed The Book in 2001 back in Norfolk.

Journey & Steve Miller Band Concert Review, May 22, 2014, San Antonio, TX

Let’s just get this straight.  I do not like The Steve Miller Band.  I never have.  I think it was because of high school and everyone played the greatest hits album incessantly.  That being said, I can tolerate Livin’ in the USA, Wild Mountain Honey and Space Cowboy.  To say I was disappointed to see that they were on the bill with Journey is an understatement.

But I bought tickets anyway.  I’ve only seen Journey one other time and that was in 2001 with Frampton and John Waite.  Great show.

Last night’s show crept up on me and the person originally supposed to go with me forgot as well and had other plans.  I asked a few others and with it being last minute, most were busy.  Wait.  A female too busy for Journey?  Certainly their vaginas were not working properly when they said that.  hahaha.  So I called up Margarita in New Braunfels, a friend that I hadn’t seen in a while and she jumped at the chance.  Perfect.  She’s cool, lives on the way and is gorgeous.  Great combo.

On our way down, there’s a bad accident on IH35 on the north side of San Antonio so after sitting in traffic forever, we were finally able to get off of 35 and take an alternate route.  That made us miss Tower of Power who were the first opener.  I wanted to see them just because.  Miller is already on stage when we walk in and is on Space Cowboy.  She likes Miller so we grab a beer and something to eat really quickly and go in for the rest of their set.  Our seats were kind of eprfect in that that our row only had those 2 seats in it.  No worries of having people coming in and out and having to move around a lot.  I’ll admit to not hating them as much in a live setting, mainly because his drummer was kickass.

Then Journey comes on opening with Be Good To Yourself and go right in to Separate Ways (Worlds Apart).  Great 1-2 punch for sure.  They sound great and I expected no less.  Arnel sounds great and he’s all over the stage.  Kid’s got a ton of energy and you can tell how happy he is to be there.  I had seen in previous setlists that Mother, Father was being played on this tour and it’s one of my favorite songs from Escape.  What made this even better was that Deen Castronovo sang lead on it.  MY GOD.  He sounded incredible and that dude’s range is insane.  Add to it that he’s an incredible drummer.  He could easily front that band.  That’s no slight to Arnel.

Journey played pretty much everything you’d expect them to play and added 2 songs from their last album.  I really wanted to hear When You Love A Woman as I love Neal’s guitar solo in that one, but no dice.

Great show and a great companion and worth every penny of the ticket price.  So…when are they coming back?

Karion Concert Review, San Antonio, TX 04/12/2014

Two years ago I reviewed Karion’s Iron Shadows release.  Last week I finally got a chance to see them at Papa Woody’s in San Antonio as they are preparing to play the KEEP IT TRUE 2014 metal festival.  I’ll just say this, they are going to go over very well there.

I was extremely tired from seeing a concert in Fort Worth the night before but I had to get off of my ass to go to San Antonio to see this legendary Texas metal band.

Their set was slated to start at 1130 and I was fading fast after I got down there.  Luckily Scott from Texas Metal Underground was there to keep me company as well as my drummer.

The band comes on and is just pounds out the metal…unfortunately to only about 20 or so people.  The 2 previous shows were better attended and also had several of the Texas metal royalty there to support.  I had only seen Art play guitar in his Motorhead tribute band, Martyrhead, but watching him play this stuff was just a pleasure.  He’s a damn killer guitarist.  Chris Cronk’s vocals are still stellar.  I recommend looking up Talisphere on YouTube.  Also, one of the audition demos he did for Fates Warning is up there as well.  Pete Perez put on a bass clinic.  What a truly gifted musician.  If you’ve heard his work with Spastic Ink and Riot, you’d already know.  The drummer isn’t original and is apparently MIA but the new guy, Chip Alexander (Evil Mothers, Hogbitch),  holds it down perfectly.  The whole show was truly great and we got the extra bonus of them playing the SA Slayer Prepare to Die EP.

I did get Cronk to sign the book and also ran into Jerry from San Antono’s Death Tripper who are also listed in there.

Can’t wait to see them again!

Iron Maiden Concert Review, San Antonio, TX 8/15/12

with one comment

It was twenty-four years and 5 days ago that I had first seen my favorite band in the whole wide world.  That was on the Seventh Tour of a Seventh Tour.  Last night in San Antonio, Iron Maiden was reliving much of that tour on their Maiden England – North American Tour 2012.  This was only my 5th time seeing them, which to me seems sparse seeing that they’re my favorite band and all.  After Seventh Son, they didn’t come through my part of Virginia and I didn’t travel for many shows throughout the 90s.  Plus Bayley was singing for them through much of that time and I didn’t care.  I did miss a chance to see them with friends at Madison Square Garden with DIO and Motorhead.  I’ll always regret not going to that one a bit.  So be it.
Last night was my third time seeing them since moving to Texas and Maiden has always made it a point to take good care of Texas on their tours.  Back on the Beast tour, they played EIGHT different cities here.  That’s crazy!  And quite awesome.

I bought 8 tickets on the pre-sale as I knew that I could always sell them to friends, which I did.  One of those tickets was for my friend, Don.  We’ve known each other since about 85, played in our first band together in the 80s, worked together after high school for a bit, acted as the best man in each others’ wedding etc.  We have some history obviously.  He moved to San Antonio 2 years ago with his company and it’s great that he’s close by again.  He actually paid for my ticket as a birthday gift.  What a droog!  He visited in 2008 to see Maiden with me on the Somewhere Back In Time Tour and we also hung out for a bit at the 1988 show.  Fitting that we’d see yet another Maiden show together.  Burney and Vanessa rode with me and it was the same four folks sitting together as in the recent Scorpions show.  Good times.

After doing some heavy metal parking lot, we decided to all go in, the 8 of us, and see what was going on inside.  Fortunately we missed every note of Coheed and Cambria.  The first leg of the tour got Alice Cooper and we get this band.  Ugh.  I got in the t-shirt line to hopefully snag a handful of the Texas only shirts that Maiden always does but they were already sold out.  DAMN!  Hopefully a friend in Dallas or Houston can hook me up.

I grabbed a Coke and heard UFO’s Doctor Doctor come on and knew that the show was about to start.  I shot a quick text to the others to let them know that Maiden was about to hit the stage.  They quickly came and we were st our stations waiting for the show.

There were no surprises for the setlist as they’ve been playing the same list this whole tour.  They opened with Moonchild and went right into Can I play With Madness.  Now, I didn’t like Seventh Son when it came out and to this day I still think it’s a wimpy album, but it was a heck of a lot better than their 90s era.  It was good to catch the songs live again.  The Prisoner came next and it was the first time I had seen them play that since 1988.  It was also the first time I had ever seen them play Phantom of the Opera.  They did 2 Minutes which is one of my faves by them and just played a solid set in general.

Adrian and Dave are probably the greatest guitar duo in metal in my opinion.  They’ve still got the chops.  Steve was spot on and Nicko was mixing it up pretty well.  His style has changed a little over the years and I only wish we could actually see him behind his massive kit and not just hear him.  Jannick Gers is still a waste of space.  Fortunately he seemed a wee bit less animated last night and mostly stayed on his side of the stage.  And then there’s Bruce.  His live voice has seemingly grown stronger over the years and last night he was on his game for sure.  I am still impressed with how strong he is live.  He has also changed his singing style over the years.

They went through lots of stage prop and background changes and it was nice seeing some of the old Seventh Son stuff again.  There were a few moments where I felt like I was back at the Hampton Coliseum in 1988.  Hearing Wasted Years always gets me right in the heart.  Steve and Adrian’s backing vocals sounded really good, too.  It really makes me long for Another A.S.A.P. from Adrian as I love his voice.  That’s not going to happen though.

They were just great overall.  If I had to complain about anything (shocking, eh?), it would be The Trooper (always hated that song), Afraid To Shoot Strangers and Fear of The Dark.  I couldn’t stand that album and those 2 songs are my least favorites off of it.  Oh well.  Small price to pay to see my favorite band again, eh?

One observation that I will make is that many of the songs seemed to played slower than normal.  Getting old or just trying to control tempo?

When is the next tour already?  Let’s go!

Thank you and goodnight!
