Odin Live @ The Whisky 8/27/11
What a weekend! As has been discussed on this site ad nauseum, I am a huge Odin fan. I love their debut Don’t Take No For An Answer and the subsequent albums all had some killer tunes on them. When I found out in the Spring that Odin was doing a show, I had to go. I’ve wanted to see them since 1986. I had a chance to see them 3 or 4 years ago but stuff came up and I couldn’t go. It almost happened again this time too. I had purchased my concert ticket right as they went on sale but waited on buying my plane tickets as right around the time of the show announcement, I was told that I’d be getting laid off soon. So I held off as I didn’t want to spend the extra money. Fortunately I was only out of work for a month and was living on the severance pay that my former company had given me. As soon as I got a new job I booked my flight to LA.
Twenty-five years is a long wait to see a band. Sit tight, this post may take a while. Maybe not.
The original plan was to stay with a good friend out there but with my flight getting delayed because of Hurricane Irene and some other unavoidable happenstances, I just decided to get a hotel in Hollywood. Good move. As soon as I landed in Burbank, I got my rental car and headed straight to Hollywood and my hotel on Santa Monica Blvd. I checked in, freshened up a bit and headed out for the night. It was about 10:15PM or so when I hailed a cab and headed straight for the Rainbow Bar and Grill. Again, good move. As I was having a few drinks at the inside bar, the guy next to me was talking to the bartender about Hurricane playing at Key Club just a few doors down. Hurricane! I always liked the song Hurricane and a few others of theirs. While they were a pretty boy type of band, they were definitely a cut above bands like Poison, Warrant and much of the other terrible glammy sleaze that plagued LA (and the world) in the late 80s.
I used to own Take Want You Want and one shaped EP on vinyl. In the late 1990s I started selling off my record collection. They were listed on eBay and Kelly Hansen, the singer for Hurricane, had gotten in touch with me to work a trade for those records. Of course I
was skeptical, but after he called me and we talked, I knew it was legit. In trade, he sent me some unopened tapes and CDs and signed one of them for me. Hard to believe that some bands don’t have their own material…same thing happened one other time with Frankie Banali. I had a WASP EP that he didn’t have from the Headless Children album. I had 2 so I gave him one.
OK, let’s get back on track here. The dude at the bar was the show promoter. He gave me his card and told me to hand it to the door guy and I’d get in for free. I offered to pay my way in but he insisted. Cool! I finished my drink and went right over to Key Club as Hurricane was getting ready to go on. I go in with no troubles, grab a beer and hit the floor. Hurricane comes on and they open with Hurricane. Sarzo and Cavazo were still in the band and I think Kelly’s brother was on drums. Of course Kelly sings for Foreigner now. The new singer is Andrew Freeman who used to play guitar for theOffspring. He sounded great and played some guitar as well. I was really impressed with them overall. I caught a little more than half of the set and then made my way back over to the Rainbow. Luckily for me Lemmy was there (of course). I got to say hi again. He remembered me from Austin. We only spoke for a minute as he was only taking a short break from the video game machine. I love the Rainbow. Such a cool place with so much history.
Being almost 2AM California time, it was almost 4AM my time, so I was pretty worn out. I grabbed a cab and went back to the hotel. I watched the weather channel’s coverage of the hurricane until I fell asleep.
After only about 4 or maybe 5 hours of sleep, I got up and muddled around town for a bit before driving out to San Bernardino to meet an old friend for lunch. It was great to see her and the Thai food was tasty. From there I headed back into Hollywood to catch Odin’s soundcheck and to get Randy O and Aaron Samson to sign the book. I got to watch them do 2 or three songs, got my signatures and hung out with Shawn and Jeff Duncan for a little bit before they left to go back home. I became friends with them a few years back when their band DC4 played here in Austin. What a band and a great bunch of guys! I really wanted to have dinner with Shawn and his fiance but I was so wiped out and just wanted to go take a nap. So we parted ways and I headed back for an all-too-short nap.
When I originally bought my ticket, I went ahead and bought a spare as I figured a friend from Austin or someone I know in LA would want to go. Luckily I happened to meet Regina in Austin a few weeks prior to the show through some good friends of mine and I mentioned that I’d be out there for the show. I asked her to go and she graciously said yes. So after waking up from my nap, I took a quick shower and grabbed a cab for the Rainbow again. I wanted some of their pizza. It’s my favorite ever. I get there and the door guy remembered me from the night before. He waived the cover and gave me 2 drink tickets. SCORE! It was still a little early so seating was pretty wide open. I sat at the outside bar as it was a nice evening. The bartender remembered me and even what I had been drinking the night before and automatically poured one for me. Peroni on draft by the way. I ordered a small pizza and it came out pretty quickly. The small is huge. I met a few people while waiting for my food and we were having a great time talking shit. They were super fun and luckily helped me eat the pizza. After the beers and pizza were done, I paid out and headed over to The Whisky to see the reason I made this trip…ODIN. Regina met up with me shortly after and we went in. I ran into some folks that I knew, mainly the other DC4 guys, Matt Duncan and Rowan Robertson. I love Rowan. He’s such a nice guy and we always have a great time hanging out. (Your arrow, siiiir.) Saw a few other folks that I knew and we hung out upstairs until Odin was about to come on. Luckily Regina didn’t mind getting in the crowd. We were about 2 or 3 people from the stage in the center.
The lights go down and Odin comes out to a loud roar from fans, including me. This show definitely brought out something in me that doesn’t happen that often. I see a lot of shows…A LOT. But very few bands actually get me “juiced”. Iron Maiden, Testament, Motorhead and a few others do. Odin did. The music nerd in me came out completely. Poor Regina. haha. Odin opened with 12 O’Clock High. It was great. Their setlist was great and Randy’s voice was in good shape. A lot of the guys who used to hit those high notes back in the old days can’t do it now. Randy hit a lot of his. And the ones he knew he couldn’t hit, he didn’t try. While they played most of the EP, The Writer and Solar Eye weren’t played. Well, a piece of Solar Eye was played which gave Jeff some solo time.
It was a great show. They were awesomely tight. I really can’t put into words what it meant to see them. It was a very special night for sure.
I love California, or at least SoCal. Never been that far north, but the LA/Hollywood area sets me right every time I am there. It’s beautiful. I almost moved there in 1997 and still do the “what if…” game sometimes.
After the show, Regina and I head back over to the Rainbow for a final drink. It was fun closing it down. The valet brought her car around and we drove around and foraged for food around town. We grabbed some fast food and headed back to my hotel. She dropped me off, I went to my room and went straight to bed, completely wiped out again.
The next morning was checkout, a drive around Hollywood for a bit and then off to the airport. Absolutely one of the best weekends I have had in a long time thanks to Odin, DC4, Hollywood, and my LA friends, new and old. Good times. If/when Odin plays again, I’ll try to be there for sure.

Odin! Odin! Odin! Odin! pt 2
I am a happy boy right now.
Odin is doing a rare show on August 27th, 2011 at the famed Whisky A Go-Go in Hollywood. I’ve been a fan since 1986 and wanted to catch their last reunion show but missed it. My concert ticket is bought and now I just need to book my flight and I’m set. This has been a long time coming.
If you like some great hard rock, I also recommend Shawn and Jeff Duncan’s band DC4. It’s killer rock and roll by a great bunch of dudes. You can read about my trip to LA to see DC4 from 2009 here.
Damn, I’m a happy boy right now.

DC4 and Warrior – 11/7/09 – Whisky A-Go-Go
When I was still in high school there was this dude that everyone called Big Bill. He was the other metalhead in the Catholic school that I was stuck in for 4 years. That dude and I were the best of friends, inseparable for the 2 years he went there and for the few years after we graduated. We traded a lot of music over those years and he really turned me on to quite a bit of metal that I probably wouldn’t have heard. I’m thankful for those years. As mentioned previously, Bill turned me on to Odin. I in turn “discovered” Warrior. Both Odin’s debut and Warrior’s debut stayed in heavy rotation throughout the late 80s. Both of them still get played quite often around here.
Earlier this year during the South By Southwest Festival in Austin, TX I had the pure pleasure of playing tour guide, roadie, chauffeur etc for LA’s DC4. This band is comprised of Jeff Duncan (Odin, Armored Saint), Shawn Duncan (Odin), Matt Duncan (Odin) and Rowan Robertson (DIO). They were the coolest dudes and we had a blast for the few days they were here. Shawn and I have been in contact on and off for a few years and I was glad to offer them assistance while they were in my wonderful city.
I saw a few months ago where DC4 was playing with Warrior at the famous Whisky in Hollywood. It was a weekend show and I decided that I might as well go. Why not? I totally dig DC4’s music and of course I love Warrior. Shawn was gracious enough to open his home to me for the quick weekend trip.
I hadn’t been to LA since 1997 and had a blast. I was looking to move there and even had 2 job offers from the 2 biggest metal labels in the area. Unfortunately with 2 days left on my trip, I received a call from my Mom saying that my Dad had cancer again and that I needed to get back home. Unfortunately Pops died a few months later and my thought of moving to LA went away as I figured I needed to stick around town. I ended up sticking around until 2006!
I took Friday off from work to get ready for my 2PM flight. I got to LA (Burbank) around 5PM Cali time and grabbed my rental car and headed north to Monrovia. The sun had already gone down and I didn’t get to see any of the scenery on the drive. With traffic I got to Shawn’s around 6:30. After hanging out for a bit and waiting for his significant other to get home from work, we ll went to downtown Monrovia for sushi. I swear it was some of the best I have ever had. We went back to the house, jibber jabbered for a while then I hit the sack. I was beat from the trip.
The next morning I went up the street to get some Diet Mt Dew. When I walked out of the 7-11 all I saw was a mountain…literally…a mountain. It was gorgeous with the sun shining on it. Shawn and I ran some errands and I got to see and remember how beautiful California can be. We went by the Santa Anita Raceway. It was busy there for the Breeder’s Cup. I only saw the outside of the place but it was gorgeous.
After returning back to the house, we got the drums packed up and loaded into his truck. He had a wedding to attend that afternoon and I offered my services to get his gear to the Whisky. It was a gorgeous drive into Hollywood and I saw many familiar sites from my last trip there. Rolling up on the Whisky I got parking right out front and got the gear loaded in. It was a bit brutal as I had to lug it upstairs. Damn! No worries, got it done.
After load-in, I mulled around Sunset for a while. I met up with an old pal of mine who had just moved back to LA. It was awesome seeing him. We went to the Rainbow for some pizza and I got to hang out with some of his LA crowd. Good times. I was in there earlier that evening for a few beers and played on Lemmy’s video game machine. That dude has the high score on every game. It was funny. It was getting closer to showtime so I walked back down to the Whisky. My dogs were tired so I just found a spot upstairs and rested for a bit until DC4 showed up to the club. It was great seeing the dudes in the band before they went on. I sat with Rowan and friends for a while. He’s such a cool dude. Great guitar player as well. Jeff was pretty happy to see me as well. We talked outside for quite a while. New Armored Saint album is finished!
The opening bands for the show were all pretty awful. Seriously. Awful. It was DC4’s turn to hit the stage so we got the drums down the stairs and on the riser ASAP. shortly thereafter they started up. Because of some rockstar BS their set got cut by about 4 songs. Didn’t matter. They kicked ass and the crowd was really into it. It was a pleasure to see.
By the time that Warrior was about to hit the stage we had just finished packing the drums back up and loading th em in the truck. I was getting really tired but wanted to catch some of Warrior’s set. Fortunately I got to hear 3 songs, the last being my favorite from their debut, Mind Over Matter. McCarty’s voice sound GREAT and Joe Floyd was playing very well. I was fading fast though. It was already 12:30 Cali time, 2:30 my time and I had been running around all day. Shawn’s fiance was going to leave so I left with her. Said goodbye to some of my pals there and headed back to Monrovia. I had to be up early for my flight out as well.
All in all it was a great trip albeit brief. After the first of the year I think I’ll make another venture out there and have a few more days to screw around.
On my flights there and back, I got to see some parts of the country that I really hadn’t seen from the air. The Grand Canyon, Monument Valley and the beautiful deserts between Texas and California really took my breath away. We really take for granted how pretty this place is. I will also say that California has some of the most beautiful scenery on earth. I will also add that LA has some of the most fake people I have ever come across. I noticed it in 97 as well. I also met some really great people as well. I guess both types are everywhere.
Looking back I really am glad I didn’t end up out there although I know I would have made my way just fine. Austin is incredible and I think we have much better looking Latinas here!
Already I am looking forward to my next trip out there.

The Metal Years
I simply love this movie. I watched it again yesterday for the billionth time. It’s interesting seeing many of the people in the movie that I’ve met a time or 2 over the years and seeing how much they’ve changed.
I’ll always love the section on ODIN. Sure, Randy O. was pretty wasted and said a few outlandish things, but at least the guy believed in the dream. And he had guys with him who believed it as well…his bandmates and Gazzari (RIP).
A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to spend a weekend with Shawn and Jeff Duncan of ODIN. Those guys are legends to me. And to no surprise, they are very cool dudes. They latest band, DC4, was here in Austin for the SxSW festival and I got to help them around town a bit. They completely kick ass. It was a pleasure for me to assist in every way that I could. Especially since I’ve been a fan of their debut since it came out. After watching the Metal Years again yesterday, it was cool to see them back then and compare them to the now. They seemed so familiar to me when I finally got to meet them.
The Chris Holmes section of the movie was always a bit weird to watch for me with him being completely tanked in the pool with his mom sitting there. I recently read on the Wikipedia page about the movie that the bottles of vodka that he was drinking and pouring all over himself were full of water.
I love the section on London as well. I had the cassette of their 2nd album way back when and liked it a lot. Would love to see this stuff come out on separate CDs…official or not.
One of the best bands featured on there was Detroit’s Seduce. A former friend from high school and I used to listen to them all the time back in the olden days. They looked glammy but were pretty damn metal IMHO.
The Faster Pussycat stuff was cool. One of my bands opened for them about 6 years ago and it was almost scary to see how much taime had changed. That dude’s a freak.
All in all it’s a fun movie to watch, even if it did focus more on the glammier side of LA. At least Lemmy and Alice Cooper got some good footage in there. It seems that this is coming out in an official DVD version sometime as well according the the Decline Movies website.

Odin! Odin! Odin! Odin!
Sure we all remember the movie “Decline of the Western Civilization – The Metal Years” and the scene where Mr. Gazzari was trying to get the crowd to chant “Odin!” The band came off like fluff and stuff in the vid, especially in the hot tub scene…but let me tell you, their debut album rocked.
This was another album that a former friend from high school turned me on to and for it I am eternally grateful. The production wasn’t so great and sounded thumpy on my record player but I loved this record. I still do. When I put it in the CD player, it usually gets 2 or 3 listens in a row.
I’m even more excited now that I found out last night that DC4 is playing here in a few weeks. DC4 features Shawn and Jeff Duncan from Odin. Jeff also plays for Armored Saint now. Apparently Odin just released a best of CD with DTNFAA (pictured) in its entirety and remastered by Roy Z. I highly recommend it. The albums that came after this were a little difficult to listen to. They really fell into the the Motley Crue/GnR styles and it just didn’t work for them IMHO. 12 O’Clock Is a great song though and the studio version is much better than the live version featured in the Metal years movie.
