Upcoming shows…

Lots of great shows coming to the area.  So many that I have to pick and choose a little more carefully to be able to afford the ones that I really want to see.

Tomorrow night I am heading to San Antonio to see Loudness.  Saw them back in 2006 and they were great.  RIP Munetaka Higuchi.

Next Friday is Orange Goblin and Naam(!!!).  I’m not a huge OG fan but I’ve never seen them.  Naam, however, has become one of my favorite bands.  This is part of the Chaos in Tejas music festival.

There’s also the M.O.D. reunion show in late June that I am fortunate enough to be a part of as Milano asked my Motorhead tribute band to open up.

I just bought tickets earlier this week to see Armored Saint and Hirax at the Key Club in Hollywood.  Should be a fun show.  I’ve never seen Armored Saint and saw Hirax for the first time 2 years ago.  I’m really excited to see Saint.

Odin is doing a reunion show in August at The Whisky and I’ll be heading out there for that one as well.  I love Odin.  Always have.  Do a search for them on this blog site, you’ll see my inner fanboy.  haha

September sees Return To Forever coming back to Austin.  I got to see the first of their reunion shows a few years ago and it was quite mind-numbing.  Unfortunately Al Di Meola isn’t on the tour, but Frank Gambale is a competent enough player to handle the duties.  We get Jean Luc-Ponty this time as well!

Concert Review – Naam 3/18/11 SxSW

I first caught Naam last year when they were on the bill with Voi Vod at SxSW 2010 and instantly became a fan.  Their breed of space rock, stoner rock, metal, psyche rock or whatever other monikers you want to give it really set well with me.

A month or 2 ago they stated that there would be no showing at SxSW 2011 because of management issues or something but ultimately they got it done and ended up doing a few shows around town.  I was able to catch the one at Headhunters on Friday.  They were on the back patio which is tiny and I was one of the last folks in the door…and that put my fat ass right in front of the band.  A little too close from a band’s perspective in my opinion but having everyone in their faces didn’t seem to matter at all.  They pushed through their set with intensity and the crowd really liked them a lot.  They were loud, heavy, solid.

Naam does it right.  They are tight and I really like the way they do their vocals by enhancing them with a lot of chorus, delay and reverb.  It fits with their music perfectly.  I’m especially impressed with John Bundy’s bass playing.  That guy works his Fender Precision bass like a $9 hooker.

Can’t wait to see them again!

You can buy their stuff on iTunes or via All That is Heavy.

Voivod Concert Review – 3/19/10

Voivod

Live at Scoot Inn, Austin, TX

I’m having a blast during SxSW this year.  Just saw legendary DC area doom band Iron Man.  Not too bad at all.  But at 5PM today I saw my second Voivod show.   Just wow.

Before the show, each one of the guys in the band asked me if I was hurt badly at the other show a few days ago.  Very nice of them.  And for my vast audience, yes, I’m fine.  No worries.

We saw a few bands before Voivod his the stage…locals Iron Age and NAAM from Brooklyn, NY.  Both bands sounded great.  Right at the end of NAAM’s set, Jeff and I worked our way into the light crowd and got front and center like we did for the 3/17 show.

After a quick soundcheck they went into the song Voivod.  Sounded great.  They are a very solid band and I wish I would have had the chance to see them years ago.  Dan Mongrain is a very competent guitar player…it’s surely a requirement to play in this band.  They have some good riffs and I really wish I could enjoy their early work a little more.  However, hearing/seeing them live is great.

They changed their setlist up a little and said that tomorrow’s set will be a little different again.  Sweet!

I was happy to see that they had some merch today.  Do I need more black t-shirts?  Well, it’s not always a question of need is it?  They had a Nothingface shirt.  Unfortunately they were out of XXL.  I should lose some weight so I can own some cooler t-shirts.  Yeah?  I instead bought the Killing Technology shirt.

The band seems to enjoy playing live.  Lots of movement, lots of glances, laughs and smiles at each other.  I’m really excited to see them again tomorrow for the 3rd time this week.

Enjoy the picks from today.  I’ll try to get some video up soon as well.
