Motörhead Concert Review March 8, 2011 – Motörhead Day!

We are Motörhead and we don’t have no class!

As many of my lovely readers may have heard from my previous post or via Blabbermouth, yesterday (March 8, 2011) was declared Motörhead Day in Austin, TX by our mayor.  Read yesterday’s post to get the precursor for this one.

I got off work and rushed home to get things together for potentially meeting Motörhead before their show.  I’m waiting on Dave and his son in front of Stubb’s and see awesome photog Jay West.  I tell him what’s going on and said I’d try to get him back there with us to get a photo of those guys with the Motörhead Day Proclamation (click for photo).  Dave and his son walk up and I send a message to my pal who works security for Motörhead.  He finds us outside and escorts to the “backstage” area of Stubb’s where Lemmy, Mikkey and some of the crew were hanging out.  This was right after their soundcheck.

Lemmy’s sitting at the door flipping through a food magazine and Mikkey stands up to greet us.  Phil was nowhere to be found, unfortunately.  Mikkey reads it then Dave tells me to give it to Lemmy for a read.  I explained what it was and he sat and read the whole thing.  He stood up and said something like, “This is neat.  I love playing Austin.  Thank you very much”  We shake hands and Jay snaps a few quick photos.  I mentioned to Lemmy about meeting him after the movie premier last year and mentioned my Another Perfect Day tattoo backpiece.  He said, “Ah yes, I told you that you should have picked a better album, right?”  haha.  “Yes sir, you did.”  Lemmy seemed tired and later that evening during the set, Phil mentioned on mic that he wasn’t feeling well, so Phil did much of the talking between songs.  Also, if you’ve seen the movie, read interviews or ever met Lemmy, he’s pretty much indifferent about stuff like this, but it was great that he and Mikkey allowed us to come back for a few minutes and share our joy with them.  Added bonus for me was getting Lemmy and Mikkey’s signatures in my book.  FINALLY!

So that was that.  Mikkey gave Dave’s son, Kameron, a can of Coca-Cola as we were leaving and he says, “I’m never opening this can…ever.”  Awesome.   I understand that sentiment as I still have an unopened bottle Heineken that Nicko McBrain signed for me in 1988.

Good times.  All of us were elated after this.  It was fun and glad that it all worked out for all of us.  I ran the book home and went to dinner with some friends.  I had no interest in seeing Valient Thorr again or in seeing Clutch.  I got back to the venue with about 4 Clutch songs left.  BORING.  I hadn’t listened to them in years and remembered why last night.  Oh well.  It was Motörhead Day and all I cared about was seeing Lemmy and the boys tear it up like they always do.

They hit the stage right at 9PM.  Lemmy opens by saying, “We’re Motörhead…and we play rock and roll.”  Then they go

right into a great version of We Are Motörhead.  Great song to open with!  The band was tight throughout the whole show.  Phil was more animated than I had seen in the last few shows.  Lemmy’s tone and playing were awesome.  He’s very unique.  If you’ve seen the Lemmy movie DVD there’s a bonus section in there about how he plays his bass.  He’s usually playing power chords and it just gives his sound that much more grind.  At 60+, the man can still kick ass.  His voice sounded better than last year as well.  Then there’s Mikkey.  All you see is hair and hands and cymbals moving.  He was awesome as always.  Easily in my top 5 drummers of all time.  Motörhead rules live, period.

The highlight of their set for me was I Got Mine.  It’s from my favorite Motörhead album and it’s just a great song.  Of course they closed the main part of their set with Ace of Spades and Overkill was the encore.

Metal Dave from 2Fast2Die said before they went on, “What a crusty looking crowd.”  Definitely.  Motörhead draws folks from a lot of different crowds.  They are also one of the bands where it seems to be ok to wear their shirts when you go see them live.  It’s always been stated (right or wrong, silly really) that you shouldn’t wear the shirt for the band you are going to see.  Motörhead and Maiden seem to be exceptions to that rule.  I saw some nice vintage shirts there as well.

It was a great show and I’m glad it sold out.  Lem’s not getting any younger and no telling when his juice is going to run out…hopefully never!  Go see this tour!

There was one major thing missing…Their front of house sound engineer Hobbs! Where was he?  Talk about a crusty old bastard.  He rules!

Happy Motorhead Day Austin, Tx! March 8, 2011

A week or so ago Dave S. told me that he had asked an Austin City Council member to see if they’d be open to doing a proclamation of some sort Motorhead Day proclamation from the City of Austin Mayorfor Motorhead, who is playing Stubb’s BBQ March 8, 2011 (tonight!).  What a great idea!  I didn’t know if the Mayor of “The Live Music Capital of the World” would go for it, but apparently he did.  A gave a proclamation that March 8, 2011 is Motorhead Day in Austin.  How cool is that?

This city is probably the only one I could think of in the States that would do something like this.  It does show that they do care a little bit about keeping the music going here, even though they seem to try and find ways to keep it down.

Once Dave had let me know that everything was a go, he sent a copy of the proclamation and I sent it in to Blabbermouth who posted it pretty quickly after getting some confirmation that it was real.  I worked for a while yesterday evening to figure out just how Dave (and I!) were going to be able to present this to the band and after last night’s encounter with Mikkey Dee downtown, it looks like we can make it happen.

It was great spending a few minutes with him again.  I spoke to him for 5 seconds last year at the premier of the Lemmy movie but have hung out with him in years past (twice with Motorhead 92 & 2000) and once with Dokken in 1991.  He’s always a super cool and we talked about some of his past adventures with Dokken where he said, “We were so awful.”  I disagreed.  I had always assumed that he was on the Geisha album “Phantasmagoria” but he said he’d left to join King Diamond prior to the recording.  I had mentioned that his joining Motorhead was the reason I ever decided to give their music a chance.  he smiled and said, “Me too!”  It gave us a good chuckle.  We snapped a quick photo and he was off to another place to see some music and I needed to get home and go to bed.

Lemmy loves Austin and anytime he goes on the road in the US, he always seems to make a stop here.  That’s great for us!  Tonight is the show with Clutch and Valient Thorr.  It’ll be great to see Motorhead live again, they never disappoint.  I’ll get a review of the show up ASAP and hopefully will also have a story about delivering the proclamation to the band.

Colin Hay Concert Review 03/01/2011

This was my second time seeing Colin Hay doing his solo acoustic show and it was great.  You can read about past experiences with Colin and men At Work here.

The show was at the One World Theatre. This place is one of the best places to see a band that I have ever been to.  It’s small (maybe 250 seats) and acoustically perfect.  It’s in the Texas Hill Country and it’s got a gorgeous setting.

Opening the show was a guy named Chris Trapper (His Wikipedia page here).  He wasn’t bad at all.  Apparently he wrote a song on the Autumn Rush soundtrack.  He had a few good jokes, played about 6 or 7 songs and was gone.

Colin comes on stage to a standing ovation, straps on his Maton acoustic, tunes it and goes right into Men At Work’s Down Under.  After this song he starts his joking and storytelling.  He hadn’t gotten to the second song yet and says, “Maybe we’ll get 4 or 5 songs in tonight.”  If you’ve seen him before, you know he likes to talk, a lot.  It’s part of his show and he’s really an interesting guy.

He ended up playing 9 songs, a few of which I don’t think I had heard before.  Of the 9, three were men At work songs:  Down Under, Who Can It Be Now?, and Overkill.  I saw that he had added Blue For You to a few shows last year and I really hoped we would have heard that one last night, but no dice.  Didn’t matter.  He sounded great.  His voice is still strong and he’s a really good guitar player as well.

During the closer, Overkill, he used a memory man pedal to record the main riff of the song during the song and actually got to play the guitar solo.  He didn’t do that last time and it was pretty cool.  I love that song.

After the show, he did a meet and greet.  Lots of people there buying his new CD which was just released that day.  Lots of folks had Men At Work stuff.  One girl was wearing a vintage Cargo Tour shirt, which was pretty cool.  I got through the line, just shook his hand, told him it was a great show and that I had seen him a few times before.  I mentioned the solo show in 2009 and Men At Work in 1999.  We snapped a quick photo and I was on my merry way.  He looked pretty tired, but he was smiling.

If you get a chance to see this tour, do it.

Not Your Older Brother’s Buzzov*en

Kings Head Inn in Norfolk, VA was legendary for us locals.  So many great bands rolled through there.  Many times we had no idea who was playing, we’d just show up and hang out and deal with the bands that were on bill, whether we liked them or not.  That’s how I first saw Buzzov*en live.  My guess is that it was around 1992/1993 as that was the time I started hanging around Norfolk a bit more.  I guess I saw them 5 or 6 times with the last show being in 95 or 96.  The memory isn’t as great as I would like it to be.

One of the main things I remember is how violent their shows were.  not necessarily because of the crowd, but the band themselves, especially lead-man Kirk Fisher.  I don’t think I ever saw a show of theirs where he didn’t end up bloody.  Were they the greatest band on the planet?  Not by a long shot, but they were highly entertaining.

Flashforward to this past Saturday night, October 2, 2010, and it was a bit of a different Buzzov*en than I was used to seeing back in the olden days.  Other than Dixie Dave Collins from Weedeater on bass, they were pretty subdued.  Dave moved around quite a bit but it really did seem like the younger years of hard living and violent touring may have calmed them down a bit.

Soundwise they were good and right on par to how I remembered them.  Oddly enough I never owned any of their albums and still can’t name one song, but they were still entertaining.

If I could complain about anything it would be the $18 cover and the lack of attendance.  The door price turned several people away and I was almost one of them, but I sucked it up and went in.  I doubt there were more than 120 people there.  Pity.  These guys are pretty legendary as far as sludge metal goes and you’d think that EYEHATEGOD’s fans in Austin would have come out.

It was good to see them again though.  now I just need to catch Weedeater when they roll through again.

There were 3 opening acts:  Mala Suerte, Honky and Dixie Witch.  They all seemed to fit well with the vibe of the evening and all 3 bands sounded great.

Asia – Concert Review – Austin, TX – August 21, 2010

1982. I was in 6th grade at Southwestern Intermediate School in the middle of nowhere Virginia. Heat of the Moment was the number one song dominating the charts. Asia was huge already and everyone knew them. We were in some class and someone had a boom box with this song playing and one of my classmates, Kevin F., was playing along to the song on his desk. Kevin was a drummer. For as much as I was into music, I never really thought about playing an instrument until that day in class when I asked Kevin t show me what he was doing. Just as simple as that, he showed me what Carl Palmer was doing on the drums. I wanted to be a drummer. Right then. Boom. It took 2 more years before my parents actually bought me a drum set, but I finally got there. And thanks to Kevin taking 10 minutes to show me “how” to play something, a new chapter…a very important chapter of my life had begun.

For all of the following school years after that, I constantly heard, “Sean, stop banging on your desk!” “Sean, stop tapping your feet!” “Sean, stop tapping those pencils!” and so on. The drums became a way of life for me between 1984 and 2000 when I was forced to give them up due to permanent hand injuries due to drumming. I loved playing the drums and still miss it every day. Fortunately I was able to pick up the bass in 2000 and able to continue on as a musician (yes, drummers are musicians too!).

So basically it was because of Asia and Kevin that I ended up playing drums. Sure, something else probably would have happened to get me there, but that was, as I remember it, the catalyst. So…blame them!

It’s also a big reason why the debut Asia album sits so very near and dear to my tiny black heart. It’s one of those albums that I can never grow tired of, no matter how many times I hear it. Their follow-up album, Alpha, wasn’t too bad either, but the debut is the one.

Being that I was also a YES fan, thanks to my older brother, it gave me an interest in Asia. Steve Howe is a great guitarist.

When I found out a month or so ago that Asia was coming here on their Omega Tour with the original lineup, there was almost no way that I could or would miss this show. I bought tix the instant they went on sale and ended up 7th row on the left side. My friend John ended up scoring front row on the same side the day before the show. Curses! Haha. But whatever. I was there and that’s all that mattered. The guy I play bass for, Doug Morrison, also wanted to go so I ended up getting 2 tix.

The show was at the Paramount Theater here in Austin and I had only seen one other show there, Return to Forever, which was quite awesome in its own right. We get to the venue around 7ish and the band was slated to start at 7:45PM. We were both a little tired from playing a gig of our own the night before. I was checking out the merch and ended up buying the shirt for their current tour as it had the tour dates on the back. One thing I noticed after I bought it was that the band’s name was nowhere on the shirt. Odd. No biggie, I know what it is and that is all that matters.

So finally the lights go down and they open up with I Believe from the Omega album. Everyone stands up to applaud them coming on stage and then we all sat for pretty much the remainder of the show. Kind of odd sitting at a rock show, but oh well. The Paramount is an old theater and the seats aren’t very comfortable, but we suffered through it.

Asia plays songs from the debut, Astra, Phoenix and Omega. The overall sound mix wasn’t that great in my opinion. It may have been because we were 7 rows back from the mains on that one side, not sure. The drum mix got better though the night but his snare was still pretty quiet. Wetton’s bass was almost silent. I even put in earplugs to see if it would help but it didn’t.

The band looked good. I mean these guys are all in their 60s now, so you don’t expect too much. Steve Howe looked like he was about 104 years old, almost like a combination of The Cryptkeeper and Dr Jim from Taxi combined. His playing was great. Nice to see those old fingers still doing those fast runs. He was solid as a rock. He wasn’t very animated but then again he never was. He was playing a double cutaway Gibson semi-hollowbody through 2 Line 6 amps. It was cool that the band took a break and he sat down and did an acoustic solo which included Ram, a great little acoustic number of his.

John Wetton was playing an old black Gibson Victory bass through a 1×15 Ampeg combo amp. Like I said before, I never really heard much of what he was doing but saw some flashes of his talent in the runs that he was playing in a few tracks. I liked that he rarely looked at the bass, he knew what to do and where. He was, however, using a teleprompter and relied on it quite often. I’m not the biggest fan of those things in general, but hey, I guess he’s gotta do what he’s gotta do. His voice was stellar. I don’t think they tuned down at all and he was hitting almost every high note with relative ease for a 60-something year old dude.

Geoff Downes really looks the same as he always has, just a little chubbier (I feel his pain!). He had the usual 3 stacks of keyboards surrounding him and his playing was fine. He also handled all of the backing vocals. Some were synthed but most were raw and he sounded great. He’s a fine keyboardist.

Finally…Carl Palmer. In general I’ve never really paid attention to him as a drummer other than what he did on the first album to inspire. It surely wasn’t because of his “badassedness”. My opinion of his playing changed a bit last night. Even as a drummer, I usually didn’t care much for drum solos. I never did them in bands I was in and most of the time would get bored seeing them by other bands. There were always a few exceptions. Carl Palmer became one of those exceptions. His solo was tasteful and entertaining. He did a lot of jazz stuff, which is what I prefer to see in drum solos. Super fast quads and triplets and blistering double bass is just so cliché. Carl played traditional grip on his left hand the whole night and during his solo he threw in some cool Buddy Rich licks, both aurally and visually. It was pretty cool. The dude has some chops. I just wish the drums were mixed a bit better. But…nice work, Carl.  By the way, Carl looks like Richard Mulligan from the TV show “Soap”.  Pretty funny.

One thing I noticed was the interaction (or lack thereof) of the band members. I’d see Wetton and Downes make eye contact a few times and I’d see Palmer and Downes smile at each other a bit. But there was no eye contact between Howe and Wetton, not even once. I sensed a little animosity. It may also be because Howe seems like he is blind nowadays. He was wearing some thick glasses.

We found out before the show that there was a no camera policy for this night. No biggie. People were still snapping shots with their camera phones (me included). By the last 2 songs, everyone seemed to be taking pictures and Howe seemed pretty annoyed by it. He made some funny faces to a few folks who got up and walked to the stage to take pictures and actually took one guy’s camera and acted like he was taking pics of the crowd. People were laughing but I don’t think Steve was doing it to be funny at all.  I was also surprised that the show didn’t sell out.  The venue isn’t that big and there were several empty seats.

Overall the show was better than I had expected. The band took a 15 minute break mid-set and the whole show was over at 9:45PM. I was very glad that I went and it was worth the ticket price for sure.  So…Thanks Kevin.  Thanks Asia.
