I will remember knocking on the cold side of your door
I was fortunate enough to get in to Fates on the ground floor when their debut Night On Brocken came out thanks to Kelz picking it up first. Early Metal Blade Records releases gave you about a 94% chance of getting something good. Fates was one of those bands. Their first 3 LPs are great, especially Spectre Within and Awaken The Guardian. The riffs were better, John Arch’s vocal melodies were brilliant, the songwriting was consistent and the lyrics were cool.
This album is brilliant front to back. There’s not a bad song on here. There’s not even a weak track. The albums brings you to emotional highs and lows. Not to many albums can do that to me. The song Guardian (see YouTube vid below) hits everything in one song. Emotion, power, sadness and then pumps you up at the end and leaves you sitting there in a cold sweat.
John Arch is in my top 2 or 3 all time favorite singers ever. His work on this album is untouchable. The way he harmonizes with himself and just some of his odd phrasing blows me away.
I urge you to see/listen to the other songs the YouTube user posted from this album and check the lyrics out here. Actually, just buy the damned thing if you don’t own it already. You will not be disappointed. I promise.

The path I chose has led me to my grave…

When I first heard Slayer I hated it. It was probably Show No Mercy and I think we were all over at Shelton’s house. He was all about some Slayer which was probably the main reason i didn’t like them. Any time you saw Shelton you heard, “Slayuh rules.” You never really wanted to disagree with him because he was an ox and would wrestle you into submission or body slam you or something. He was a bit of a nutcase and I always felt sorry for his mom. She was so nice.
Metal Blade Records put out 3 compilations called The Best of Metal Blade (vols 1, 2 and 3…duh). Each of them had Slayer and I liked the songs that were compiled…Chemical Warfare, Evil has No Boundaries, Black Magic and Die By the Sword. But I still didn’t consider myself a fan. Then one day in 1986 I was at either at Kelz’ or Danile’s house (sure, his name is Daniel but spelling it Danile is much more fun) and someone had Reign In Blood (on cassette of course!). I was so not into listening to it when they were talking about it. I’m stubborn. Some things never change as I am still stubborn, but I digress. I sat defiantly and quietly in my listening as Angel of Death started.
Then the drums kicked in. WTH? Are those his feet doing that? Really? Someone says dude, check this part out. Yes, you know which part. Right at the end of the solo when everything stops and it’s nothing but Lombardo’s feet pounding the shit out of the kick drums. “Play that again.” “OK, one more time.” “Can we check that part out again?”
On that day I became a Slayer fan. Soon after I went back to the older stuff and really gave it a chance. Raw. Vicious. Vile. Crude. Badass. The whole album plays like a concept album even though it’s not. The cool thing was that the whole album fit on one side of the tape so you never had to turn the tape over when it was in your car stereo. It’s the best and fastest 29:03 of your life.
I went to a Catholic high school and got kicked out of religion class every few weeks for arguing theology or from some other class for just for being a pain in the ass. Instead of going to the office I’d usually just go to the library and listen to Reign In Blood. It was more productive. When classmates would hear it they’d just shake their heads.
I liked South of heaven when it first came out but it was no Reign In Blood. I was pretty much done with Slayer after Seasons In the Abyss. They got a little too…polished.

It all comes around to Dokken again…
and ellipses.
So I am at the local Fresh Plus grocery store which is a trendy little hippie run place in Clarksville. I really hate the place because of the scenesters that work there that look at you funny because you walk in with a Black Sabbath shirt on.
But I went in today cuz I wanted some fresh ground beef and theirs is always cheap (I think it’s human meat, not cow but whatever) and it’s only a few blocks away. One of the floppy haired kids that worked there was wearing an ’88 Dokken tour shirt, original. As I was leaving I asked to check out the back but this shirt was for the west coast leg of the tour. I told him I saw that tour in Virginia and he freaked out. He asked who they played with and I mentioned that it was Aerosmith when they were still gasping their last breath of air in being a decent band. Yeah, they suck now.
It was obvious the kid didn’t really know what he was wearing, but it was a nice trip down memory lane. Both Dokken and Aerosmith kicked ass that night.
The down side of that night was that I was supposed to meet up with a girl I had been hanging out with at the time. Lisa. She was a pretty blonde haired, blue eyed petite girl who was really nice. I got to the show at Hampton Coliseum and saw her holding hands with the guy that she broke up with a month or 2 earlier. I was a little broken hearted but I got over it quickly once Dokken hit the stage. My buddies and I pushed our way all the way to the front and rocked out on the barricade front and center.
Good times.

The Great CD Purge of 2008
This week I have these up for sale on eBay.
I’m going through my CD collection and trying to carve it down some. There’s so much fluff and stuff in there that I just never listen to so there’s no need to keep it around. The last purge I did back in 2004 reduced my collection by about 200 CDs. I don’t think this one will be as drastic.

The highs and lows of being a metalhead.
So the doors opened at the venue at 4:30 and I rolled up to it around 3:30. People were parking along the ditchline off the travelway so I followed suit as the gates weren’t open.
A cop rolls by after we had been waiting for about 30 minutes and was broadcasting the message that if we didn’t move we were going to be ticketed blah blah blah. So some people were moving out of line to go ride around and I just moved up a little closer as it was only one cop. As soon as about half of the cars had turned around and got out of line, they opened the gate and I got a spot right next to the venue.
So I’m in line and security comes by and says all cameras must be left in the car, so about 50% of us went back to our cars and put them away. Sorry, no pics or videos. Some people still got some in but oh well. It wasn’t worth the potential hassle.
My seat was on the outer edge of the first elevated seats and it was starting to rain a little. It wasn’t windy so I never really got any water on me. Jason McMaster bought my spare ticket and sat with me for the first 2 bands. The girl that was on the other side of me was drunk and wouldn’t stop talking to me during Testament or Motorhead so I finally just said, “I’ll be glad to talk to you AFTER their sets are over…Right now I want to hear them, not you.”
So, Testament comes on and sounded great. Chuck Billy’s voice was powerful and clean, much better than when I saw him in 2000 which wasn’t bad either. Their set was cut short as Disciples of the Watch wasn’t in there. They only did 6 songs and their set was about 25 minutes. They sounded great though.
Motorhead hits the stage and I swear I have no idea what the first song was, it didn’t sound like Dr. Rock which is what they’ve been opening with lately. This is what I can remember, there may have been one more. Their set seemed short as well.
???
Stay Clean
Be My Baby
Killers
Metropolis
In The Name Of Tragedy
Going To Brazil
Killed By Death
Ace Of Spades
Overkill
They sounded great and Lemmy’s voice surprised me quite a bit. He sounded much better than the last 3 shows I had seen. Campbell looks terrible lately, like a cancer patient. Mikkey’s drumming was great as usual but the drum solo bored me senseless.
So, between Motorhead and Sabbath, McMaster gets a call from a buddy and tells me he’ll be right back. He comes back with an unused backstage pass and a ticket for the orchestra seating area. He said, “Go meet Lemmy, I’m going to the 5th row to see Dio.” Sweet! I go over to the backstage gate and the guy looks at my pass and says that it’s a no go. Apparently the pass was for an earlier meet and greet and I never got backstage. Sabbath had just finished their second song as I was just about to walk back to my original seat. My friend Amber comes from backstage with a Priest VIP pass. She handed it to me and said “Go met Priest.” Sweet! No go…again. Their session was over.
So I went back to my seat, enjoyed Sabbath, called Ouro and wished him Merry Christmas. Dio’s voice was also in tip top shape. He sounded better than he did in NYC last year. No cheating of any higher notes that I noticed. He just wailed like only he can do. Iommi and Geezer were their same stoic badassed selves. Appice sucks. ZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Their set was simliar to this:
01. E5150
02. The Mob Rules
03. Children of the Sea
04. I
05. Sign of the Southern Cross
06. Ear in the Wall
07. Vinny Appice Solo
08. Time Machine
09. Falling off the Edge of the World
10. Die Young
11. Heaven and Hell (extended)
12. Neon Knights
They seemed shortened too, though. It went by so quickly.
So after Sabbath finished their set, I left. Never heard one note of Priest being played.
Next week I may be seeing Alice Cooper, Dangerous Toys and Yngwie in Houston.
